Free State Stars snatch a draw with Bidvest Wits

Posted: 22 February 2011 Time: 18:10

Bhongolwethu Jayiya got his sixth and seventh goals in five matches as Bidvest Wits drew 2-2 with Free State Stars on Tuesday.

Stars came from two goals down to earn the draw, after a brace from new sensation Bhongolwethu Jayiya had put the Clever Boys 2-0 up.

Thabo Matlaba and Aleni Lebyane struck in the last quarter of the game to secure Ea Lla Koto a valuable point in this catch-up fixture.

Stars started the game confidently and had the first shot in anger with less than 60 seconds on the clock, as Madoda Motha left fly from outside the penalty area only to see his effort go wide of Darren Keet’s right hand post.

Two minutes later both sides were dealt early injury blows as Ea Lla Koto striker Boitumelo Sekgobela and Clever Boys defender Tefu Mashamaite collided in mid-air and had to be replaced by Petrus Mahlatsi and Mzwanele Mahashe respectively.

With 17 minutes of play having elapsed, the match was suspended for over half an hour due to lightning in the vicinity of the venue. The game resumed at about 4.20pm.

The break seemed to knock the hosts more out of their stride than Wits, who started to dominate and create scoring opportunities.

Just before the half hour mark Thando Mngomeni tested Mweene with an effort direct from a free-kick but the Stars keeper made a straightforward save.

Mweene was in action again just over 10 minutes later, saving brilliantly from a goal-bound long range effort from Sifiso Myeni.

Wits did eventually break the deadlock, with Jayiya scoring a long-range stunner in the last minute of regulation time in the first half, after picking up a pass from left-back Patrick Phungwayo.

And the brilliant Jayiya made it 2-0 in the 65th minute, cracking home a low shot from just inside the penalty area after good set-up play from substitute Ryan Chapman.

However, Wits’ two-goal advantage last just three minutes as makeshift striker Matlaba scored from a Thamane Motaung cross in the 68th minute to make it 2-1.

Ea Llo Koto completed their comeback just two minutes from the end of regulation time, with substitute Lebyane heading home in the 88th minute from a Makola corner-kick.

good game but i think referees need to keep an eye on these free state stars i've been following their recent games espesially against chiefs, pirates, sundowns, arrows and today wits!!!!

I wonder what steve kompela tells these boys because they can really play k.a.k or wrestling and lots of their opponents are going to be hospitisized!!!

I just envy the way Wits is scoring goals..they bloomed late but still there is a lesson to that. Give the team a chance to Gel, WITH THE COACH, dont rush things because when they form naturally you know its the real deal, and Wits is now the real deal. Pity Sundowns, Aces never learned that. Sundowns should learn from this...a forged team cut and paste does not have a standing character. The tam must gel naturally.

Eish! to let F S Stars get a last minute goal like that is cruel! sorry boys but coming back with a point is good! Bhongo, well done boy! i said that you seem to be the lucky charm and i like your attitude boy - stay humble and you will continue to knock them in. 7 goals in 4 matches is a mean achievement!

Be afraid Sundowns be very afraid!!!!
