Bidvest Wits beat Santos in Nedbank Cup

Posted: 13 March 2011 Time: 17:14

Darren Keet was superb between the sticks as Bidvest Wits beat Santos 1-0 in a Nedbank Cup last 32 match at Bidvest Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Students dominated possession in the 90 minutes, but struggled to really create the number of goalscoring opportunities they should have. Instead, Santos looked more like scoring, but in the end a goal from Sifiso Vilakazi saw Wits win the game and progress to the next round.

For Wits though, a lot of thanks has to go to their keeper, who was magnificent in goals.

The first half saw Keet in action the most; his first a brilliant save coming in the 26th minute, diving to his left to deny Elazar Rodgers. The Santos man let fly from the edge of the 18-yard area and only the finger tips of Keet pushed the ball over the crossbar.

The only other decent chance of the half also went the way of Santos two minutes before the break. Jurie Basie hit a powerful shot from 30-yards out that again saw Keet at his best, making another fantastic full-length save to tip the effort around the post.

The second half saw Wits at least able to create chances on goal and they didn’t have to wait long to find the game’s only goal.

In the 50th minute Vilakazi made no mistake with a clinical finish when he rounded off a great passing movement firing his side in front from close range.

In the 74th minute Ryan Chapman should have doubled his side’s lead when he latched onto a good through-ball and found himself one-on-one with Lee Langeveldt. The Santos goalkeeper, however, produced a good save diving to his left deny the Wits man from scoring against his former team.

The match finished 1-0 in favour of Wits, who progress to the next round of the Nedbank Cup.
