Noah Chivuta scores as Free State Stars beat Ajax Cape Town

Posted: 27 October 2010 Time: 21:47

Noah Chivuta scored in the final minute as Free State Stars completed a ‘smash-and’ grab 1-0 victory over Ajax Cape Town in their Telkom Knockout clash at Athlone Stadium.

The first 45 minutes failed to deliver much in the way of goal-mouth action, with chances at either end severely limited.

Ajax were the superior team in attack, but in the absence of the suspended Thembinkosi Fanteni, there was no-one up-front to round off any chances or indeed create opportunities.

Ajax made a decent start to the game and had a good opportunity in the 12th minute, but George Maluleka could not put the ball past Kennedy Mweene after being set up by Stanton Lewis.

Stars barely troubled the home defence, with Hans Vonk only being called into action in the 23rd minute when he saved Noah Chivuta’s free-kick.

Just before the break Maluleka had another go at trying to break the deadlock, but he flashed a 25-yard effort just wide.

It continued in the same vein after the restart as Maluleka came close with a 48th minute chip.

Thulani Serero became far more prominent in the second stanza and combined nicely with Lewis in the 54th minute, but sent his shot wide.

Lewis himself then shot straight at Mweene, as did Thulani Hlatshwayo, before Serero found hit the post in the 70th minute.

There were half chances for Aleni Lebyane and Mpho Maleka late in the second half, but no indication that Vonk’s goal was under any threat.

Until the 90th minute that is, when Chivuta pounced from close range after Ajax failed to clear a goal-mouthy scramble.

Disappointing .... When are Ajax going to get decent cover for Terror? Get one of the Sundowns strikers down here soon! Again Ajax in the last few minutes - the boys need to be sent for concentration classes.

Nothing is interesting about Ajax, they got young boys who are just eager to do well guided by experience like Vonk. You see now Etugral bad blood with Mabhuti caused Khanyeza to leave, am sure with Terror and Mabhuti, it could have been another story...Comitis, mostly Coaches come and go...some players can deliver for you working with different Coaches you hired and fired....just a tip

It is good for the winning team.
Mr Editor, the last time I checked, Mpho Maleka was a Mpumalanga Aces player not a Free State Stars one.
