Kaizer Chiefs beat AmaZulu in Telkom Knockout

Posted: 23 October 2010 Time: 22:25

Kaizer Chiefs beat AmaZulu 2-0 in the last 16 of the Telkom Knockout Cup on Saturday night.

Goals from Abia Nale and Reneilwe Letsholonyane, near the interval, settled matters for the Amakhosi.

AmaZulu, who were second best for much of this encounter, where outdone by a well drilled Chiefs side who were firm on defence and creative on attack.

The match started at a good tempo much to the delight of the approximately 25 000 spectators in attendance.

Kaizer Chiefs’ Knowledge Musona was the first player to get a shot on target when he hit a well drilled effort from the edge of the AmaZulu penalty area in the 17th minute, but Mbongeni Mzimela playing in goals was able to collect comfortably.

A few minutes later a Musona free-kick deflected off home side’s defensive wall and rattled the upright, Mzimela was well beaten. The kick was awarded when the keeper was judged to have handled the ball outside his area.

AmaZulu’s only attempt on goal in the half came when Ayanda Dlamini arrowed a firm header on target from Bongani Mbele’s set-piece, Itumeleng Khune – the Chiefs goalkeeper – needed to attempts to gather the effort.

But as the half progressed, the visitors began to up the ante and it was only through some desperate defending that AmaZulu prevented Chiefs from opening the scoring.

And when Musona was gifted possession by the opposing defence, he hit the base of AmaZulu’s upright with Mzimela at his mercy.

Chiefs’ pressure finally yielded dividends in the 41st minute when Kaizer Motaung collected the ball in midfield, shrugged off a marker, beat another and slid an inch perfect pass into the path of Nale. The winger applied the finishing touch with a firm low drive that had the beating of Mzimela.

Two minutes later, Mthokozisi Yende, playing in central midfield for Chiefs, threaded the ball to Musona who took up a wide position on the left flank. The striker left his marker for dead and fired a low cross into the AmaZulu penalty area.

Three unmarked Chiefs players were queuing up to blast home but Letsholonyane took it upon himself to apply the finishing touches, he easily side-footed past a stranded Mzimela.

Try as they like the home side were still not able to muster any meaningful attempts on goals in the second half.

Apart from a few probing crosses played into Chiefs penalty area which Itumeleng Khune dealt with easily, AmaZulu had nothing to show for their second half endeavours.
