South Africa are at the top of Group G with four points after playing to a 0-0 draw against Sierra Leone in Freetown.
Pitso Mosimane's troops and Sierra Leone went into this match knowing that they had to give nothing away to better their qualifying chances of the 2012 continental showpiece after receiving the news that Niger thumped group favorites Egypt 1-0.
Bafana Bafana are now in a comfortable position in the group as they are on four points and the seven times African champions Egypt's slip up in Niamey opened the group even wider and makes it more competitive than it was on paper.
Coach Pitso Mosimane made one change in the team that beat Niger in the last game.
This saw Teko Modise taking the place of the injured Steven Pienaar in midfield and the match went to half-time with scores tied at 0-0 after the home team and their partizan crowd did what they could to catch Bafana out.
The second-half followed in a similar manner, and despite Sierra Leone having a fair share of possession, the South African defence stood strong and the game ended goalless.
Bafana goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune was voted the Man of the Match for three outstanding saves.
The pitch was in poor condition but the home team seemed to cope better in extremely hot conditions.
Bafana will be very happy for getting a point from this match.
After this weekend’s matches South Africa head Group G on 4 points followed by Niger on 3 points then Sierra Leone on 2 points with Egypt on 1 point at the bottom.
