Nyasha Mushekwi scores as Sundowns beat Vasco da Gama

Posted: 29 October 2010 Time: 21:58

Mamelodi Sundowns extended their lead at the top of the Absa Premiership standings after a 1-0 win against Vasco da Gama at Newlands Stadium on Friday night.

Nyasha Mushekwi was the hero for the Brazilians, turning home Matty Pattison's shot on the half-hour mark.

The visitors had all the play for the opening 15 minutes, but it was Vasco who had the first chance of the night when Jonathan Armogam shot weakly at goal after being nicely set up by Sibusiso Zuma’s square ball.

Mushekwi had Downs’ first chance of the night, but saw his goal-bound 21st-minute volley smash into Aiden Jenniker when a goal seemed a near certainty.

Despite finally having started to enjoy more of the ball, Vasco found themselves 1-0 down in the 29th minute when Pattison’s diagonal shot across the goal was neatly buried at the back post by Mushekwi.

That was it for first half goal-mouth action; the next chance arriving three minutes into the second stanza when Armogam skied a close-range volley after some great work by Jenniker.

In the 56th minute a moment of hesitancy from Calvin Marlin allowed Armogam to steer the ball over his head towards the net, but Vuyo Mere saved the day for Downs right on the goal-line.

Vasco showed they could really match their more illustrious opponents as the game remained tight; the next chance coming in the 80th minute when Bradley August came close with a 30-yard free-kick.

Downs had a couple of half-chances late on through Mabuthi Khenyeza and Franklin Cale, and in the end managed to hold on to a hard-earned win against the Cape side, who made a real game of it in the second half with superb endeavour.

Well done Sundowns, but it is a matter of time Mr Lopez before you go to Spain. The way Sundowns is playing with that type of quality and experience, Gordon was better and is better. How can we go all the way to spain just for sundowns to achive such type of football? Sundowns because of better pleyers not coach.

Lopez you are just nothing but a tata machance man. If you play lotto you can do better. The way Sundowns is winning is all about lucky and quality of pleyers. Lopez the type of football sundowns is playing we dont welcome it here. At Sundowns we only have player not coach. Lopez u are just like a Captain.

Ahhoy Yellow planet!

15 and counting!!!

Shu! Iyadlala iVasco bafwethu. This team does not deserve to be relegated. What were we doing with those chances in the first half? I thought we battled hard for those points but we came through. That's the mark of champions in the making. The coach made wise substitutions when called upon but I would have preferred Zothwane as Pattison seemed to struggle towards the end. We needed to stabilize the middle.

A QUESTION OF STYLE...

Lopez is skating on thin ice. That's the worst i've seen Downs play. There's no cohesion when we enter the opposition half. The striker is forever isolated yet Booth keeps pumping long balls. Was there really a need to play 1 striker & 3 central midfielders? Time for Tso & Mmotong 2 get a run & 4 Pelembe & Surprise to join Cale on the bench!

well done bafana bastayela. i must admitt though that the whistle seemed to take too long to come, we were on the back foot for most of the second half. but it was always expected, small teams always will perform like this against big teams, the same happened for pirates against them. kabo yelo

Errr. Congratulations are in order for a hard fought win, 3points is what it's all about.

Vasco were no pushovers last night and were pressing Downs from the onset, credit should be given to Das Neves the losing coach.

As for Lopez Habashwe, I for one understand that at times we have to grind out results, we ca'nt expect it to be easy all the time because some of our opponents do their homework (esp. away)......the 3 defensive midfielders I guess were meant to cushion our back four with Fatty Patty expected to push forward as a 'CAM' which he was'nt comfy with at all, since 'Shekiman' ended up being isolated.

Let's seetry the young Shongwe in that central attacking position instead of Fatty, the young Mkhwanazi is defensive and has a couple of things to learn for now....otherwise,,,,,It's Downs or nothing!

I must say, I am very impressed with Sibusiso Zuma, He is such a good player, hard worker. He does not look that old, outrunning the youngsters.
