Mamelodi Sundowns and Platinum Stars draw

Posted: 30 January 2011 Time: 17:26

Mamelodi Sundowns and Platinum Stars drew 1-1 in a League match on Sunday afternoon after Sundowns dominated the second-half.

The first goal was scored by Jospeh Malongoane while Nyasha Mushekwi got the equalizer for Sundowns.

The hosts almost opened the scoring in the third minute, with Elias Pelembe latching onto a poor clearance and shooting just wide of the target with a skidding volley.

Stars came even closer themselves just three minutes later, with the upright denying Edward Williams a long range goal after his shot had taken a wicked deflection off defender Matthew Booth.

The visitors needed goalkeeper Tapuwa Kapini to come up with an excellent save to keep out a ferocious free kick from Franklin Cale in the 17th minute. The set piece was conceded in the ‘D’ outside the penalty area by Mbulelo Mabizela, who had to resort to a blatant body-check to stop Nyasha Mushekwi.

By this stage the Brazilians had taken charge of the game and on 26 minutes the overlapping Innocent Mdledle whipped in a fine cross from the left that gave Mushekwi a heading chance, but he could only direct his effort straight at Kapini.

Mushekwi had another great chance two minutes later, peeling off the back of his marker to run onto a clever pass from Pelembe, but he was denied by a brave block from the excellent Kapini.

Dikwena threatened sporadically, with their best chance arriving in the 33rd minute when Henrico Botes was presented with a shooting chance on the right of the ‘Downs penalty area, but the Namibian striker only hit the side netting with his shot.

Yet nine minutes later, and very much against the run of play, Stars took the lead. A swift counter attack saw Williams play a perfectly-weighted ball for Joseph Malongoane to run onto and the young winger finished with the chance with impressive aplomb, chipping the ball over the advancing Wayne Sandilands.

Malongoane’s goal left the Brazilians looking down the barrel at half time, but it took them just 14 minutes of the second half to bring themselves level. Pelembe whipped in a superb cross from the right flank and Mushekwi finished emphatically with a diving header to make it 1-1.

Sundowns created two chances for Mabhuti Khenyeza within ten minutes of their equalising goal, but the attacker saw his first effort well saved by Kapini and for his second he opted to cross rather than go for goal and left substitute Richard Henyekane with too much to do at the far post.

On 77 minutes Stars’ Solomon Mathe waltzed his way through the home side’s backline but, rather than looking to shoot on goal, he opted to try and square the ball for Botes and his delay allowed just enough time for Method Mwanjali to make a saving tackle.

Sundowns dominated what remained of the match but were simply unable to find a way to penetrate Stars' defence.

Well Sundowns is just pathetic, yesterday their supporters were chanting at Chlorokop to force the management to get rid of Makhanya, Dumitru and Moloto. Police had to be called to calm the situation; the team has only win one game out of the past six. To show that the team is a Spaza shop, Habas said Modise was not signed by him and he did not want the player. Modise has passed his sell by date and he was a player before the Confed Cup but Sundowns signed him with a lot of money. The latest at Lucas Moripe Stadium, police have been called again to protect Moloto, Habas and others from unrully fans.

congrats 2 habas. i hope those blind sundowns supporters who told me to get off habas case r overwhelmed with joy. again booth was running towards goal when we conceded, am i suprised? mwanjali is being destroyed like xulu. as ussual habas saw no need to finish da game in da first half, hoping his super subs will do da job. we might have quality players but they need a coach too. barcelona has the best squad in da world but without a coavch dey r nothing. unlike my team, best players but no coach. i feel soory 4 pelembe, modise, xulu, mungomeni, mushekwi, modise, khumalo, zothwane & henyekane. with habas as our coach, who needs enemies. i used to defend motsepe, but now i can see that he is the other reason behind our downfall. everybody, except him, saw that sundowns was a force to be reckoned with under stoichkov, but they opted 4 a fool who cant speak a word of english. a bad move. although it will b stupid to fire habas now, i think motsepe must swallow his pride & bring stoichkov next season. i used to hurt when my team plays k**k, but i'm so used to it it doesn't hurt no more. thanks to habas.

is it not strange how a draw has different meanings. mid week u played to a draw, every mpofana celebrated, we get a draw we r now reminded we have lost 2 "valuable" points. with habas u dont have to worry, he will make sure sundowns do not win da league. so ur wish will come tru. happy now?

You got to love the sundowns supporters- we'll support the team but when enough is enough- it's enough!
I'm tired of watching the stale football the team plays whether they win or not- i just can't take it anymore!
We have the players to win the league but as far as habas- i've already given up on him- 3 defensive at home in a must win game that's ridiculous. we need a coach, I'm tired of seeing booth, nyandora, moriri in that team- this team doesn't look like they want to win the league judging by their body language. at least habas days a numbered after today's draw.
Ted should be a good replacement- the guy is always clear about the type of footbal the team should be play. i don't know why people want him to leave when he's not involved with the senior team- he has been in north west all along. Moloto can go- he has signed too many players in such a way that one becomes suspicious of his actions. Makhanya should pack his bags too- they have failed Motsepe big time- the president has only acted in the interest of the supporters so i don't expect people to blame him for those who serve the club in dishonesty.
