Ajax Cape Town beat Vasco da Gama 2-1 in a League clash at Athlone Stadium on Saturday night.
Both Ajax goals were scored by Thulani Serero while Zeka Karkee scored for Vasco.
After a frenetic start which saw a couple of half chances for Vasco through Jonathan Armogam and Sibusiso Zuma, it was the Urban Warriors who broke the deadlock after 25 minutes.
Following a sustained period of pressure, Derek Decamps swung in a cross from the left which Jason Barnard fumbled, allowing Thulani Serero to slot home from 10-yards.
Vasco had a fantastic chance to hit straight back when Zuma laid the ball on for Lebo Mothibantwa 10-yards out, but the on-loan Pirates man smashed the ball high and wide.
Carlos das Neves’ men squared the game at 1-1 after 52 minutes when Zeka Karkee deflected Francois Adams’ ball across the goal, into the net, appearing not to know too much about it.
Ajax had chances to go back in front, but from range neither Brent Carlese nor Sameehg Doutie were able to hit the back of the net.
However, Serero was not to about to let the derby fizzle out into a stalemate.
In the 78th minute he picked up the ball 25-yards out, slicing through the Vasco defence and playing a one-two with Doutie before poking the ball past Barnard, the goal highlighting his incredible pace and skill.
The goal took the wind out of Vasco’s sails and Ajax almost made it 3-1 late on when Billiat’s shot crashed into the crossbar.
