A single goal from Fikru Lemesse was enough to see SuperSport United beat Free State Stars 1-0 in a Premiership match played at Goble Park on Saturday afternoon.
Although it was only a one goal ball game, United were by far the better side and consequently the result saw the SuperSport finish seventh in the league standings.
SuperSport should really have taken the lead in the 17th minute when Morgan Gould rose highest to meet a Glen Salmon free-kick, but his six-yard header went over the crossbar when he should have at least hit the target.
As the half progressed Stars really struggled to get hold of the ball and when they did they surrendered it with some disappointing long range shooting.
The start of the second half finally saw United rewarded for all the pressure as they found the game’s opening goal five minutes into the second stanza.
Lemesse was the man to find the back of the net for the Tshwane side when a quick passing movement found him in some space ten yards out from goal. The United player did not hesitate to fire the ball past a sprawling Mweene, 1-0.
Stars tried to fight their way back into the game, but they did not seem to have the imagination to break down what was a solid looking SuperSport defence.
Still, the home side persisted with long range shots, but with very little success.
In the end United deserved the win and picked up all three points to see them finish inside the top eight.
