Santos and Pirates draw

Posted: 7 May 2011 Time: 17:02

Orlando Pirates laboured to a 1-1 draw with Santos at the Athlone Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Despite dominating play throughout the 90 minutes, the Sea Robbers needed a last minute equaliser to grab a share of the spoils and remain in the title hunt – two points off leaders Ajax Cape Town.

Pirates conceded as early as the seventh minute, Erwin Isaacs getting on to Ricardo Skippers’ long ball to side-foot home; Jacob Mokhasi caught in no-man’s land.

Pirates stormed back, at least they tried to, but they found it hard to create chances against a resolute Peoples’ team defence.

Dikgang Mabalane was unfortunate to be denied by the post in the 22nd minute after a speedy counter had seen him break free down the right, while just before the break Lucky Lekgwathi flashed a header wide from a corner.

This was little respite for Santos in the second half as they found themselves regularly defending corners and crosses into the box, while the likes of Rooi Mahamutsa and Oupa Manyisa regularly got shots in, most of which were off target or blocked however.

Andile Jali also did his bit in attack and would have picked out the top corner with an 80th minute rocket were it not for a superb save by man-of-the-match Tshepo Motsoeneng.

But finally the pressure paid dividends when in the 90th minute Bongani Ndlulula made space in the box before flicking the ball into the net, with his back still turned partially to goal.

Jali was denied a late winner by yet another Motsoeneng save as the Cape side survived a late onslaught.

@Sean, you so right. This boys are fcuked, so many opportunities to be in the driving seat of the league, what do they do, they screw up again. This is a bad result

Pirates only plays well in the middle of the park and once inside the 30 yards then everyone thinks they score, no composure. Thats why our strikers are struggling to score, given half a chance like today see what Ndulula has done. Great goal. As for the league, we have to throw the dice......Damn Pirates.u

I will forever be positive and after Kaizer Chiefs did us a favour we will win against Arrows and Maritzburg will draw, at least with Ajax. I don't care everybody who is negative towards the coach and our team. OPFC remains my beloeved team whether win or loose. Fans are unpredictable...look not far at the farmers how they are singing a different tune of commenting VV. I am not going to be trapped in that position of being negative towards coach or anyone...win or loose.

@ Tholly.ba.Thate right on brother, I am with you on that one. I don't know why all this negativity when really there is still a chance to win it all in 2 weeks time, really, and who would bet against Maritzburg winning and us beating Arrows? It will happen you watch Ajax have choked big time - look no further than this game, the game in Cape Town was always going to be tough that is a fact especially when Santos scored first.

Kaizer chiefs will win the league. OP has to play Aces made up of players who want 2 prove a point nd market themselves 2 remain in PSL; Ajax have 2 face Maritzburg which is running away from relegation and Sundowns is out of the race. Chiefs is only playing Amazulu which is not under any preasure.....wow... I LOOOOVE THIS GAME...HAHAHAHAAHAAAAAAAA
