Bloemfontein Celtic ensured that their last home game of the Premiership season brought them another three points, as they defeated Mpumalanga Black Aces 1-0 at the Seisa Ramabodu Stadium.
On-loan Orlando Pirates striker Siphelele Mthembu continued his excellent recent form by netting the only goal of the game late in the first half.
The sides exchanged early chances, though Aces will feel that they should have broken the deadlock on 26 minutes when defender Warren Bishop got on the end of a Joseph Makhanya free kick but was unable to direct his header on target.
Seven minutes later Aces’ goalkeeper Denis Onyango made a great save from Danny Venter, tipping the Celtic midfielder’s long range effort around his post.
But on 41 minutes there was nothing Onyango could do to deny Celtic a goal. Strike pairing Clifford Mulenga and Siphelele Mthembu combined well, with the former setting up the latter to score from just ten metres out.
Just past the hour mark, Phunya Sele Sele looked to double their advantage. Mulenga curled a great shot on target from a set piece, but Onyango made another excellent save to keep his team in the hunt.
And Aces almost pulled level late on, with substitute striker Myron Shongwe heading just off target from another good set piece by Makhanya.
