Ajax Cape Town have taken a three-point lead at the top of the Absa Premiership table after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over AmaZulu at a cold and windy Athlone Stadium on Friday night.
Ayanda Dlamini had given Usuthu an early lead, but the Urban Warriors kept their title dreams alive thanks to strikes from Khama Billiat and Clayton Daniels.
AmaZulu were ahead inside two minutes after some sloppy play from the home side. The Ajax players expected the ball to go out of play on the right and stood still.
But when it did not, Tangeni Shipahu collected the ball and crossed for Goodman Dlamini, whose shot was blocked by Hans Vonk, who could not stop Ayanda Dlamini from scoring his 10th goal in all competitions this season.
It took a while for the Urban Warriors to get into the game, but after a quarter of an hour they began to find their passing range and it was no surprise when they were level on the half-hour mark.
Billiat fed Serero and the Ajax playmaker showed good skill to work a crossing position, from where he put the ball in the six-yard box, and perfectly onto the head of the onrushing Billiat.
The home side were ahead eight minutes into the second period when Daniels scored as he side-footed home a volley from a corner.
Ajax were left to play the final 10 minutes or so with 10 men after Granwald Scott was unable to continue through injury and coach Foippe de Haan had already used all three of his subs.
That opened the door for Usuthu and they were almost level when a thunderous 40-yard drive from Bukasa Kasonga beat Vonk, but not the crossbar and it cannoned away to safety.
