Maritzburg United and Bidvest Wits played to lively 1-1 draw in a Premiership match at Harry Gwala stadium on Friday night.
In a match of two halves, Ryan Chapman put the visitors ahead in the 12th minute, but United hit back with a late goal from Diyo Sibisi.
In the end a share of the spoils is a fair reflection of this contest as Wits looked the better side in the opening stanza with United come back strongly in the second half.
United got off to a flyer with Kurt Lentjies testing Darren Keet’s handling skills in the rainy conditions as early as the third minute by drilling a shot on target, but the ball flew straight at the keeper.
The home side should have taken the lead two minutes later when Keet parried Sibisi’s strike into the path of Fadlu Davids, who was following up, but he failed to convert with a close-range header.
Against the run of play, Wits took the lead when Chapman powered home a header from Asive Langwe’s corner.
The goal seemed to shake the lethargy from the visiting team.
United’s keeper Shu-Aib Walters did well to keep out Sibusiso Vilakazi’s well-struck effort from the edge of the penalty area in the 17th minute.
By this time Wits controlled proceedings, as the home side struggled to get a foot on the ball and had to rely on counter-attacking moves to get into opposing territory.
A minute before the interval, Chapman directed a scorching shot at the United goal which had Walters diving full length to his left.
The home side were more lively after break, hoping to claw their way back into the contest.
Wits defender Patrick Phungwayo nearly gave them a lifeline when his mistimed attempt to clear Elias Ngwepe’s cross flew just over his own crossbar in the 55th minute.
A well worked move by the home side saw Felix Obada tear down the left flank in the 57th minute and play a telling ball into the Wits danger area.
But with the goals at his mercy Sibisi was unable to make contact with the ball.
During a rare second half raid from the visitors, Mark Haskins was given space to shoot but he could not send his effort past Walters.
After much pressure in the latter stages United equalised in the 93rd minute when Sibisi headed home an Obada cross.
