Ajax top of the table after win over Arrows

Posted: 15 April 2011 Time: 22:04

Ajax Cape Town kept their title hopes alive with a commanding display at Newlands Stadium on Friday night, beating Golden Arrows 3-1.

Thulani Hlatshwayo, Thulani Serero and George Maluleka got three for Ajax, before Arrows pulled one back with a Collins Mbesuma penalty.

The Cape team proved just too hot for Arrows, who offered little in attack.

Ajax dominated early play with Arrows happy to sit back, soak up the pressure and try and break on the counter-attack.

The Cape side, however, struggled to test the Arrows defence, who were well organised early on, after Mseketi Mvalo was replaced by Mzivzukile Tom, having been torn to pieces by Sameehg Doutie early on.

Ajax’s more ambitious play was rewarded in the 21st minute when Hlatshwayo netted his first ever goal in the Premiership when he sunk a 16-yard header from Brent Carelse’s corner.

Soon after, Terror Fanteni had a goal ruled off-side.

The KZN side waited until the last two minutes of the opening half before bursting to life when Norizaku Murakami tested Andre Petim with a powerful free-kick which was heading towards the top corner, and then Collins Mbesuma came close with a header.

Ajax needed the cushion of a second goal and it came in the 53rd minute via the irrepressible Serero, who was too quick for several Arrows defenders as he skipped past them and blasted in a shot at the near post with his left foot.

In the 63rd minute it was 3-0 as Maluleka scored from right on the line after Siphamandla Ntombela failed to deal propetly with Serero’s initial shot.

The Durban side were able to pull a goal back when Mbesuma netted an 83rd minute penalty.

But there was no hope of a comeback – in fact it was Ajax who nearly netted another goal through Clayton Daniels.

Calculators have run out of batteries bcos salad fc/ coleslaw supporters have been counting the whole night. League goes to either Ajax or Sundowns period. The so-called soweto/ zimbabwe used to be big giants are just adding numbers. Some will say de one who think with his balls must go whilst other will cry as usual. Some hypocrite says . Serero must be voted player of the season forgetting dat he once said 'Nyawana' who failed trials at 1st division is Psl's player of the season. Nt evening buying of referees will help salad.

I liked 3 thngs abt Ajax victory last night...

1. Dey only got a 2 goal advantage out of da match which means we will topple dem 2mrw wit even a 1 nil victory...
2. Ajax's win made sure dt Musunu x1 wil nt go top of da table even if dey bribe da referee 2nyt...
3. Serero continues being on fire which will ensure dt Chimps won't get full points out of deir tie with Ajax...

Mbuyane & Mashego shd stop wasting goal scoring opportunities as dis title luks certain to b decided on goal difference as I foresee Bucs playing one draw as well in 1 of deir 4 remaining games...

So Chiefs are not going to top the league this weekend, not even for 20 hours. Damn Ajax is cruel. Aces must just take them out of their misery.

The El Classico is upon us. I can't wait.

Orlando Pirates FC to win the league championship with a game to spare.
