Ajax beat Mpumalanga Black Aces

Ajax Cape Town are up to second on the Premiership table with a stuttering 2-1 win over Black Aces at Athlone on Sunday.

Seydouba Soumah and Thulani Serero put Ajax 2-0 up, before Gordon Gilbert got a consolation goal for Aces.

Aces started with purpose and had a brilliant 18th minute chance though Myrone Shongwe, who had his weak effort saved by Hans Vonk after David Mathebula’s superb through-ball.

The Urban Warriors took the lead in the 28th minute when Khama Billiat split the Aces defence to put through Soumah, who made no mistake with a cool finish.

Soumah again showed great composure to net just two minutes later but was unlucky to have the goal disallowed for an alleged off-side.

It was all Aces for the first 25 minutes of the second half as Amazayoni played with passion and commitment and created several problems for the Ajax defence.

They were unlucky though when Gordon Gilbert’s 50th minute header his the woodwork and also came close on a couple of other occasions.

Ajax applied the killer blow in the 72nd minute when Serero raced onto Lebo Manyama’s pass and hammered in a shot from a tight angle.

A Gilbert header from Shongwe’s cross in the 89th minute proved only to consolation as the Cape side held on for the three points.
