Lehlohonolo Majoro’s injury-time penalty meant AmaZulu salvaged a 1-1 draw against Bidvest Wits at Ulundi Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Sifiso Myeni had seemingly given the Students the three points when he netted in the 84th minute until the late invention for Usuthu.
There wasn’t much goal-mouth action in the opening exchanges which the Students got the better off, but their only real chance of the half came in the 17th minute when Junaid Mashamatie rose highest to meet the a free-kick, but his header was a poor one and went straight to the keeper.
In the 19th minute Majoro tested Darren Keet from just inside the 18-yard box with a stinging shot, but the United keeper was up to the challenge. Eight minutes later and Mxolisi Mayonga should really have given AmaZulu the lead, but he proceeded to waste Sibusiso Hadebe’s accurate cross.
Keet then ensured the match went into the break on level terms when he produced a fantastic save to deny Hadebe from six-yards out.
Ntokozo Sikhakhane wasted another great chance for AmaZulu when he headed over the crossbar from ten yards out in the 56th minute, and nine minutes later Tangeni Shipahu forced Keet into another good save from distance.
Then, against the run of play, Wits grabbed their only chance on goal in the second half. Patrick Phungwayo broke down the right and supplied a good pass to Myeni on the edge of the area, from where he made no mistake.
But AmaZulu made sure they shared the points when Majoro netted from the spot following a handball in the box.
