Moroka Swallows registered a hard-fought 1-0 win over Platinum Stars at Dobsonville Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Bradley Ritson burst the bubble in the 89th minute to put the stadium into frenzy after a well taken cross from Siyabonga Nomvete.
Platinum Stars have only themselves to blame as they also created numerous chances during the game, but failed to punish Swallows when they had them under siege.
The first half was clearly Swallows’ as they were in full control as Macbeth Sibaya and Lefa Tsutsulupa controlled the midfield, while Nomvete and Cheika Cesse often threatened the visitors’ goal.
However, while Swallows seemed to be in control of the proceedings, it was also worrying that they did not seem overly worried about their opponents and that much ball possession and attempts at goal was no guarantee of victory yet.
Vuyo Mere could only put his arms behind his head after his attempt at goal went inches wide in the 5th minute. In the 21st minute, Joseph Molangoane produced a great save out of Greg Etafia.
Towards the end of the first half, Platinum Stars tormented the Swallows’ defence but all their attempts went begging.
In the second half, Swallows did not have it easy. Stars gave their all but their midfield and strikers lacked coordination.
They were unlucky not to have scored in the 56th minute after Greg Etafia made yet another save after a goal mouth scramble.
Stars could have scored in the 66th minute, but substitute Bradley Grobler’s free-kick was well read by Etafia in the Swallows’ goal.
From that moment, Swallows looked dangerous on a few raids they launched, but found Stars’ defence uncompromising and keeper, Tapuwa Kapini could only watch the proceedings as the visitors were buzzing around in a vaguely threatening manner.
However Swallows’ efforts were rewarded when substitute Bradley Ritson rose above the Platinum Stars’ defenders to head a Nomvete’s cross in the 89th minute.
