United looked a side possessed in the opening minutes and were rewarded for their efforts with the early goal.
After a swift passing movement Felix Obada found himself with the ball, unmarked and six yards out from goal, but his shot struck the woodwork.
Luckily enough for Maritzburg the ball rebounded straight into the path of Sibisi who made no mistake, firing the ball home from close range to make it 1-0.
Shortly after the goal Platinum Stars came to life and should really have found the equaliser in the 11th minute. Mbulelo Mabizela supplied a well weighted cross into the box and Thabo Mongalo met it with a powerful header, but his effort just skimmed the wrong side of the upright.
However, despite that scare United were back on the attack two minutes later when Rudolph Bester let fly from the edge of the box, but his shot sailed wide.
As the half came to a close Fadlu Davids should have doubled his side’s lead, when he rose highest to meet a Byron Hendricks cross, but his header was saved by Tapiwa Kapini.
Platinum Stars came out a renewed side and took firm control of the match in the second 45.
Four minutes into the half Herico Botes pulled the best out of Shu-Aib Walters, with a stinging shot from 14 yards out. Walters showed his acrobatic ability, diving to his right to save.
11 minutes later Thusa Phala scared the United keeper when his 12-yard shot just skimmed the wrong side of the upright.
In the 70th minute Almiro Lobo also came within inches of drawing his side level when his 18-yard shot also narrowly missed the target.
Thereafter, Platinum Stars continued to press forward in search of the equalising goal, but they could not find it and the game finished 1-0 in favour of Maritzburg United.
