Bloemfontein Celtic beat Golden Arrows

Posted: 12 February 2011 Time: 17:54

Bloemfontein Celtic continued their impressive form in the Absa Premiership with a 1-0 victory away to Golden Arrows at Chatsworth Stadium, with Hlompho Kekana scoring the game’s only goal.

The victory extends Phunya Sele Sele’s unbeaten streak to ten games and breaks a frustrating run of five draws. Arrows, meanwhile, have now suffered four defeats in succession and could drop out of the top half of the table by the end of the weekend.

The home side shaded the possession stakes early on and caused a few nervy moments for Celtic, but the visitors’ defence held firm.

Celtic stunned their hosts when Kekana capitalised on some slack defending by Arrows and belted home a powerful drive from distance in the 17th minute.

Arrows made concerted efforts from then onwards to level matters and just found it near impossible to penetrate Celtic’s rock-solid defence. As a result, the Durban team was forced to fire from distance and even those attempts were easily absorbed by the away team’s back-four.

Collins Mbesuma had his first attempt at goals in the 59th minute after powering his way past two defenders, but his low drive was well gathered by Celtic goalkeeper Patrick Tignyemb.

Six minutes later Arrows keeper Thulasizwe Khuzwayo was called into action. He was forced to make a desperate double-fisted clearance when Celtic’s lanky striker Nathan Paulse was trying to get his head to a cross played into the Arrows penalty area.

Thamasanqa Gabuza was just about direct a shot at Celtic’s goal in the 71st minute but Kgotso Moleko was able to make a timely intervention.

Arrows we were well on top at this stage and made repeated raids into the Celtic penalty area. From one such move in the 73rd minute, Mzivukile Tom hit a powerful shot on target but Tignyemb managed to get his body in the way. Gabuza, who was following up, sent a header from close range of target.

In the 86th minute, Gabuza mistimed a header which the Celtic keeper gathered with ease.
