Ajax move up to second

Ajax Cape Town’s 2-1 win over SuperSport United at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday afternoon sends them up to second on the Absa Premiership table.

On a scorching summer’s day the Urban Warriors had to sweat for their victory against the Pretoria side, who gave as good as they got and were always in the game.

The first half was fairly evenly balanced, with Ajax enjoying slightly the better of play and goal opportunities.

The Cape side were caught napping at the kick off and were fortunate that Tebogo Langerman was unable to pick out Letladi Madubanya, who was lurking eight yards out.

But the home side regrouped themselves and came close to scoring when Sameehg Doutie’s corner nearly beat Rowan Fernandez.

The Urban Warriors began to grow in confidence and at times played some real fantasy football, stringing together a succession of first time passes.

This resulted in chances for Khama Billiat, but when Terror Fanteni picked him out in the middle after 15 minutes the Zimbabwean’s touch was poor and a good chance went to waste.

Soon after he was unable to apply the final product to a scintillating Ajax move as he shot over the bar from 18-yards.

The visitors then had a few chances as Morgan Gould exerted his frame in the box, but he sent one header over the bar and one straight at Hans Vonk.

The remainder of the half was evenly balanced, and a 0-0 half time score-line seemed on the cards.

But just before the break Billiat sprinted into the box, turned his man and squared the ball for Lebo Manyama, who curled the ball into the top corner expertly.

Madubanya nearly levelled matters in the 46th minute when he ran onto David Kannemeyer’s long ball and then saw his flick just skimming the bar.

But United got their goal soon after when Mogogi Gabonamong beat Vonk from close range after having eluded the off-side trap; 1-1 after 55 minutes.

But the Cape side restored their lead the very next minute when Terror Fanteni scored with a superbly taken header following Doutie’s cross.

Fikru Tefera could well have made it 2-2 with 10 minutes to go, but he was unable to beat Vonk, who made a wonderful save.

And just after, Jabu Maluleke missed an even easier chance, skying the ball over the bar from not more than five yards out.

SuperSport mounted attack after attack in the closing stages of the game, but the home side showed guts and determination to repel everything that was thrown at them.

Tough at the top of the table more for us KC. Fanteni is always scoring, he is definitely better than Mashego of Red Pies.

Unconvincing win. Ajax looked not in control without Thulani Serero. I don't think they will sustained their ambitions for the championship. Couch should be worried by his back 4. They struggled dealing with diagonal balls. Also not depth in the bench. It will be difficult for them agains Pirates, chiefs and Sundowns. 3 points maximum is what they get out of the 3 games. 4th or 5th position should be their best. As for S/Sport they look like a team preparing for next season. I dont see them earning the top 8 sport.

Good for Ajax to keep the pressure on the other top clubs. Must keep winning. Chiefs still look the favourites but it can be done, Ajax.
