Mamelodi Sundowns beat Moroka Swallows

Posted: 2 February 2011 Time: 23:00

Mamelodi Sundowns returned to winning ways on Wednesday evening with a 2-0 away victory over relegation-threatened Moroka Swallows at the Mbombela Stadium.

Nyasha Mushekwi continued his form in the absence of want-away striker Katlego Mphela, scoring an early goal that set the tone, while defender Method Mwanjali made it 2-0 midway through the second half.

The result is yet another blow to the Birds, who remain second from bottom on the log and next have a tough away game against Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs.

The Brazilians got off to a perfect start, with Mushekwi scoring in the first minute of the game with a low shot.

There were no further notable attacking moments in the first half, though Swallows certainly looked desperate to try and get a foothold in the game but could find no way through the visitors’ defence.

The Birds shuffled their pack at the start of the second half, sending on striker Brad Ritson in place of the ineffective Shaun Haschick, but the Birds still lacked a potent goal threat.

Sundowns almost doubled their lead in the 53rd minute, with Elias Pelembe firing a good shot on target from a free kick, but Greg Etafia made a fine save to keep his side in contention.

Yet there was nothing the Nigerian shot-stopper could do to prevent Mwanjali’s goal in the 68th minute, with the Zimbabwean defender crashing home a shot from the edge of the box to kill off the game.

Sundowns took their foot off the pedal after the second goal, and even a debut for marquee signing Teko Modise didn’t really spark them back to life, but they had done enough to wrap up the points.

The win sees Sundowns move to third place on 35 points, leapfrogging Ajax Cape Town who drew away to Bloemfontein Celtic.

Swallows are still in 15th place, three points ahead of Black Aces but a full six points adrift of the safety of 14th place, presently occupied by Maritzburg United.

Though Downs won, I won't 4giv Habbas and his troops for donating valuable points to minor teams lyk AmaZulu until they beat Ajax, Chiefs and Pirates to make sure th@ they maintain the number 1 spot until the end of the season.

Gud results indeed, the team @ no1 is only three points away. Mr edit whatever u are smoking is killing u Sundowns can't play with ten players unless there was a red card even before the game begin.

Well done with the win and 3 points in the bag!

I listened to the last 20 or so minutes of the match on radio and if what the commentators were saying is anything to go by wrt the combination of Pelembe,Modise,Cheeseboy supported by Nyandoro and Pattison is anything to go by, then Christmas would have really come early for Sundowns.

Teko was buzzing and unless the coach has other ideas, this combo will massacre a lot of teams, just put Milkshake upfront and let the samba dance start, Habas you have everything you need, we shall wait and see what you have in store for us.

Makhanya and Trott should go now and Habas at the end of the season, unless of course we miraculously start playing good football!

A great win by the house of style and gold.

Wonder: its good to see you happy my brother, Sweyts had a sleepover at Alex Shakoane's place.

I am glad Teko is settling nicely at Downs, and Sundowns fans deserve credit for the reception the have given the Navigator now known as Torres of Pretoria.

The race is now tense, Sundowns stands a better chance than Chiefs. Its between Sundowns and Pirates.

I listened to LigwalagwalaFM commentary an dthey definately were mentioning Cheeseboy's name but it does not appear on the Kickoff line ups? where they seeing his ghost or they sent a Chiefs supporter to do the match for them and since bekaminye kakhulu couldn't concentrate enough? hayi man Kickoff, up your game!

That's what happens with cut and paste!

Saying the race is between Sundowns and Pirates, clearly shows your hatred for Chiefs, but we understand. deep down you know that we are going to win this league, you are still going to play us , don't forget
