A goal four minutes from time by Diyo Sibisi salvaged a point for Maritzburg United in a 1-1 draw against AmaZulu in an Absa Premiership match at the Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The game was certainly not a dull affair and AmaZulu looked destined to collect all three points, after leading the game since the 22nd minute thanks to a goal from Sibusiso Hadebe, but their hearts wear broken just before the final whistle.
It was all action from the word go in this KZN derby as both sides attacked and neither seemed content to sit back.
In the third minute Fadlu Davids rose highest to head a left wing cross, but his effort sailed narrowly past the right-hand up-right.
A minute later AmaZulu were on the attack with Tangeni Shipahu trying his luck from roughly 20 yards out. Shu-Aib Walters, though, was alert to the danger and made a comfortable save.
Then, in the sixth minute, Diyo Sibisi had a great chance to open the scoring for United, but his header went inches wide of the post.
It was a half of many chances and it was only a matter of time before the first goal.
In the 22nd minute, Sibusiso Hadebe scored a peach of goal when his 30-yard wonder strike found the top left hand corner of the net, 1-0.
Maritzburg upped their efforts and should have drawn level in the 40th minute. Mor Diouf met a cross with a powerful header, but his six-yard attempt went over the crossbar.
Diouf was in the thick of the action again a minute before the half-time break. He did brilliantly to rise above the AmaZulu defence, but his header struck the woodwork and bounced away from danger.
In the second half the home side tried to get back in the game and they came bitterly close in the 54th minute when substitute Gert Schalkwyk fired a shot goalwards from 25 yards. Mbongeni Mzimela made a fantastic save, tipping the effort away from goal with his fingertips.
In the 66th minute Bongani Mbhele tried his luck from 30 yards, but his shot was also superbly saved by Walters diving to his right.
With only minutes to go it looked as if AmaZulu had snuck an away win, but it was not to be as Sibisi found a goal for the home side and earned United a share of the spoils.
