Bidvest Wits beat Santos 3-1 in a League match on Wednesday afternoon.
The Wits goals were scored by Masashi Mzwanele, Bhongolwethu Jayiya and Stanton Fredericks while Erwin Isaacs scored for Santos late in the game.
The first 45 minutes was not the most exciting as both teams struggled to create goal scoring chances.
It was, however, the perfect start for the home side as the Students took the lead in only the 11th minute of the match. Mzwanele Mahashe found the back of the net for Wits after he rounded off a good passing movement with a clinical finish, 1-0.
After going a goal down Santos tried to hit back, but a stubborn defensive performance by the home side saw them keep a clean sheet going into the half-time break.
The second-half saw Wits start a little slowly and they almost paid dearly when an Erwin Isaacs header skimmed the crossbar in the 52nd minute.
That close shave seemed to awaken Wits and they soon found their rythm and consequently their second goal in the 67th minute. Bhongolwethu Jayiya continued his rich vein of scoring form in the League when he scored in his third consecutive game to give Wits a two goal lead, 2-0.
Twelve minutes later and the People’s Team’s problems were compounded when they conceded a penalty. Stanton Fredericks then made no mistake from the spot to give his side a three goal advantage, 3-0.
After going a third goal down Santos struggled to find their way back into the game. Still, they did manage to find a consolation goal minute from time when Isaacs pulled one back for the visiting team, 3-1.
For Wits the win saw them jump five places on the log to seventh, while Santos stay fifth tied with Bloemfontein Celtic.
