Ajax go top of Premiership

Posted: 28 January 2011 Time: 22:42

Ajax Cape Town have moved to the top of the Absa Premiership after a 2-0 victory over Moroka Swallows at the Cape Town Stadium on Friday night.

The Urban Warriors were always in control of the game, yet spurned a number of excellent opportunities before Brent Carelse and Sameehg Doutie netted in the second half to seal the points.

The opening period was largely uninspiring, save for pockets of excellence from Ajax, and some meaty challenges from Swallows.

Thulani Serero and Granwald Scott had shots saved by Greg Etafia in the Swallows goal, while Thulani Hlatswayo might have done better at the back post when he met the ball with his head, but could only put the effort wide.

Ajax were dealt a blow when Terror Fanteni limped out of the game on 28 minutes as Swallows' physical tactics began to pay dividends, while the Urban Warriors' Carelse was shown a yellow card for simulation when the referee might just as easily awarded a penalty after a challenge from Vuyo Mere.

Fanteni's replacement, Doutie, somehow missed a glorious chance at the start of the second half when he put the ball wide from four yards with the goal at his mercy following a great knock-down from Hlatswayo.

The goal finally did come on 67 minutes though when Man of the Match Serero was allowed to get the better of the defender on the right, and his square-ball from the byline was easily turned home by Carelse.

Ajax had a massive shout for a penalty soon afterwards as Serero looked to be impeded as he went for Doutie's cross, but there was nothing given by referee Robert Sithole, much to the dismay of the home side.

Serero slipped in Doutie down the right and the latter's shot was well kept out by Etafia, which was the start of a mad few minutes that led up to the second goal for Ajax.

First Hlatswayo and Lebogang Manyama missed one-on-one chances with the keeper, before the brilliant Serero squared a pass for Doutie, and the winger kept his composure to score.

Well done Ajax, the only difference between the urban and other so called title contenders (my team included), is CONSISTENCY, they have now won 3 out of four, keeping 3 clean sheets, that boy Serero is out of this world, he must just keep his feet on the ground, he's bound to achieve a lot in football, Foppe De Haan is a great coach, he works well with the youth, once again, Kudos to Ajax, they keep keeping on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If Foppe de Haan was coaching Pie-Rats, he would have been in the same situation as Rudi Kraal is in right now. Its just that Rudi is doing well right now and he has management support otherwise he would have been gone long time ago. Dutch coaches believe in professionalism and discepline and will alwayz have problems in coaching teams that have stupid supporters who support players rather than the whole team!

this has nothing to do with OP, Chiefs are the once on Top after Wednesday's win over Celtics, remember you are the once who borrowed OP the top spot until your game on Wednesday, this complicates matters for most than OP!

to be honest I fully agree with you, our PSL players, once they get an hour on Marawa's show, they change, look at Jali, he was given only 30min, we hailled him, I was one of the people who sung praises to the boy, look at him now, the stories we hear about him! shocking! Dutch coaches or Krol dont kill players, lack of descipline does, we also almost lost Mashego, now he is getting there, Serero is not always on the news, look at him!

Many teams are still going to suffer Ajax beating, the team can play.
If style of play has anything to do with marketing, then the so-called old Clubs should be ready of the new kid on the block.
Ajax will in 10 years have made an impact in South African market. Their style of play appeals to all and i'm confident that a 10% market increase in the next 10 year shall have been met.
PSL and NFD clubs should visit Ikamva to learn fundamentals of football development.
