Bloemfontein Celtic and Mamelodi Sundowns draw

Posted: 19 January 2011 Time: 21:47

Mamelodi Sundowns recorded their first draw of the League season, playing to a 1-1 draw against Bloemfontein Celtic at the Seisa Ramabodu Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The Brazilians opened the scoring through Katlego Mphela, Phunya Sele Sele replied through Thokozani Mshengu, and the visitors ended the game with ten men after Lebohang Mokoena was sent off with just over 15 minutes to play after picking up his second yellow card.

The match started at a fierce pace, with play running from end-to-end as both teams set out to play attacking football. Sadly, the venue was barely half full by the time of kick-off but those that did make the effort to come out were treated to some fine entertainment.

Sundowns very nearly opened the scoring within the first five minutes, as Mabhuti Khenyeza forced a diving save from Patrick Tignyemb in the Celtic goal and Matthew Pattison was unlucky to see his long range effort rebound off the base of the upright.

In the seventh minute the Brazilians were rewarded for their positive start, with Katlego Mphela opening the scoring with a well-executed diving header. The architect of the goal was Franklin Cale, who played in a superb cross from the right flank.

Celtic very nearly drew themselves level just three minutes later, handing Thokozani Mshengu a shooting opportunity after some slick passing, but the winger’s low shot thundered into the post and rebounded to safety.

Both sides enjoyed periods of dominance in the remainder of the first half, though some good defending ensured that the attackers were mostly restricted to speculative long range efforts.

The exception arrived on the stroke of half time, as Phunya Sele Sele sprang away on a counter attack, Moses Spandeel found himself one-on-one with Wayne Sandilands, but he unselfishly handed Mshengu a tap-in to bring the scores level at 1-1.

And in the 74th minute Lebohang Mokoena was shown a red card, reducing the visitors to ten men. The attacker had gone down on the edge of the Celtic box under a challenge from Prince Hlela but the referee judged it to be simulation and showed Mokoena a second yellow card. Television replays suggested that Victor Gomes got the decision spot-on.

In what remained of the game, Celtic dominated possession but were unable to force home the advantage. The closest they came to claiming a winner was in the 87th minute when Bacela was presented with a sharp chance, Sandilands made a crucial save and the rebound off Matthew Booth bounced wide of the target.

The big 3 really suck. Bucs or Kaizer Chicks could be on top if they were consistent. Wow Downs, first draw? That must be a record of sorts

Cheese was not supposed to be red carded.

I'm not sure though whether to laugh or cry at this result, in fact i have mix feelings with any result we get.

Anyway, we are still number one and thats what counts!

I'm glad Mutizwa will not feature in our next game as he is suspended, that will give either Mdledle or KHumalo an opportunity to operate on that left side. Mutizwa plays well as a right back, but at left back, he doesn't give us option going forward. i hope with the injury to Cale and suspension of Cheese will finally result in Pelembe getting a starting berth. for the whole 90 minutes, not even once was Mphela given a true pass to run into, only crosses which are normally easy to defend.

With a bit of luck, we may see Jabulani Shongwe as well!

"Television replays suggested that Victor Gomes got the decision spot-on." Come on Mr Editor, which game where you watching, or you were listining to that crap Brian Mathe. Please get yourself a PVR you can pause, rewind and play in slow-mo. I dont know why is Supersport always giving Brian Mathe Sundowns' games. He commentary is always against them and I hate it.

@King Don - your observation are correct brother. Supspersport also seem to be determined in undermining Mamelodi Sundowns. Mokoena was clearly brought down and should have received a free-kick. It's OK Masandawana - let's get behind our team no matter what!

i have never been the one to praise mediocrity. Last night we were bad. Booth tried, he played well. even Xulu and Tshilo. Method was bad, Nyandoro and Pattison have lost the touch, they were overrun by Celtic. Cale is good, we all saw it. Lebogang tried, the red card was deserved. Killer got no proper supply and Mabhudi, it wasnt his day. Next time we need to start with Mdledle or Khmalo at left back, Method is struggling there. having said that, we still hung on, although it is two points lost. the league is still ours, we are gonna win this one, against all odds. I think Pirates have a better chance of catching us rather than Handkerchiefs, they will talk until the last day when we win the league by two points!!!!!!! Well done boys, YELLOWWWWWWWW

Guys are we saying all what we said based on what really happen or which teams we support.Mokoena is very talented player i agree 100%. The fact is he got the red card because he was already being booked before finish and klaar.
We all see what happen not only Sundown supportes. Soccer is contact sport you like it or not.Mokoena took a dive, doesn't mean because was that soft contact he must dive like that. Good call on that ref.
