Ajax Cape Town dominate against AmaZulu

Ajax Cape Town moved up to third place on the Absa Premiership standings with a 2-1 away win over AmaZulu at the sweltering Ulundi Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Urban Warriors recovered from conceding an early goal to Usuthu’s Tangeni Shipahu to claim all three points on offer thanks to an equaliser from new signing Brent Carelse and a second half winner from defender Derek Decamps.

The match got off to a poor start for the visitors when Ayanda Dlamini slipped a pass through for Shipahu and the attacker duly beat Hans Vonk to put the KwaZulu-Natal team 1-0 up in just the 10th minute of the game.

Yet Ajax pulled themselves level in the 17th minute. Winger Sameehg Doutie created a chance for Brent Carelse and the midfielder, making his first appearance since returning to the club on loan from SuperSport United, hit the back of the net to make it 1-1.

Later in the half Vonk made an excellent save to deny Ayanda Dlamini, tipping the striker’s shot over the crossbar just a few minutes before the break.

Six minutes into the second half, the Cape side completed their come-from-behind heroics. Doutie was again the architect, playing in a fine cross from the corner flag, and Decamps, making his first appearance of the season, headed the winner past Mbongeni Mzimela.

Clayton Daniels, Khama Billiat and Brent Carelse all had chances to increase Ajax’s advantage, but their inability to convert left the away team having to fight a rearguard battle in the final few minutes as AmaZulu threw bodies forward in search of an equaliser.

However, the Cape team held firm in defence and secured a 2-1 win that sees them move up to 24 points, just three short of log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who were beaten 1-0 by Kaizer Chiefs in Saturday afternoon’s other League game.
