Santos completed a fine finish to 2010 when they defeated defending Absa Premiership champions SuperSport United 2-1 at the Athlone Stadium on Wednesday night.

Vuyisile Wana and Erwin Isaacs netted for Santos, while SuperSport were given a glimmer of hope thanks to an Anthony Laffor goal.

Despite early United dominance, the first shot on goal was from The People’s Team. Orlin Powell let fly from about 30-yards out, but it was a comfortable save for Wayne Brown in the visiting goal.

Eight minutes later, though, there was nothing the SuperSport keeper could do when he was beaten by Wana. Powell whipped in an inch perfect cross to find Wana unmarked inside the box and the Santos player made no mistake with a clinical finish from 16-yards out to give his side the lead, 1-0.

The start of the second half saw Wana creating more trouble for the SuperSport defence when he fired in another ferocious shot from the edge of the box, but Brown pulled off another fine save, this time with his feet.

Then, in the 63rd minute United’s terrible season got even worse when they went a second goal down, this time courtesy of an Isaacs penalty-kick. Morgan Gould was adjudged to have pulled down Powell inside the box and Isaacs made no mistake from the spot, 2-0.

SuperSport were able to pull a goal back four minutes from time thanks to an Anthony Laffor goal, but it was mere consolation as the game ended 2-1 in favour of the home side.
