Robyn Johannes scores as Orlando Pirates beat Maritzburg United

Posted: 26 November 2010 Time: 21:58

Ezenwa Otorugu scored late on as Orlando Pirates beat Maritzburg United 2-1 at Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday night.

The first real chance of the game came in the fourth minute when Phenyo Mongala whipped in an inviting corner kick. Nigerian striker Otorogu rose highest at the front post to make the header, but his effort went inches wide.

Two minutes later and Shu-Aib Walters made his first save, stopping Thulasizwe Mbuyane’s weak shot, before United almost scored against the run of play – Rudolph Bester’s shot hitting the upright after some fine build-up play.

Finally, after a sustained amount of pressure, Bucs found the back of the net from an unlikely source. Johannes pounced on a poor clearance and fired his side in front with a perfectly placed shot from the edge of the area.

In the 41st minute only the fingertips of Walters kept his side from going further behind when he was at full stretch to his left to tip an Otorugu header over the crossbar.

The second stanza saw United quickly find their way back into the game when Lentjies scored the equaliser nine minutes into the half.

Johannes turned villain when he committed the foul that led to the goal, and Lentjies curled a beautiful 20-yard free-kick around the wall and into the bottom corner.

On 76 minutes Pirates nearly took the lead when substitute Tlou Segolela almost concluded a great passing move with a goal when his 12-yard shot struck the woodwork.

In the 83rd minute Bucs got their winner – though there is some dispute as to who actually scored. Mbuyane ran down the right and put in a cross which Fabian McCarthy appeared to turn into his own net, though Otorugu will claim he got the final touch.

Not really a convincing win,but Im happy that we won and that some of the players we were criying about did manage to play tonight.but as usual I thought Teko was starting to enjoy himself and get substituted and honestly speaking I prefer Mashego ahead of Malokase.again Im now starting suspect that Mbuyane is having some kind of a deal with Krol, every player can be benched or substituted but Mr Mbuyane is a real coach favourite.guys we need some explanation hear.yes of course he created the second goal but his overall perfomance wasnt the best.I like him though but just like any player he is prone to critiscm.

If the rubbish that the Rats dished out tonight is all they can offer I see a repeat of NOVEMBER 13 MASSACRE.

Hahahahahahahahhahah, the Rats fans never ceaze to amaze. The mighty Amakhosi massacre their team 3-1 and they say it was luck. Yet they celebrate a purely lucky win against a lowly team.

Now c'mon Rats fans. You still don;t want to accept that the NOVEMBER 13 MASSACRE was well deserved by Amakhosi but you want us to see your scrappy win against a rubbish team as a real win.

@Million,you thought so and truth be told regardless of a win, this forum is an opportunity for us to analyse hence my statement.not personal, but we've got to be constructive anyway.its the very first time I critise Mbuyane but if he doesnt play well I have the right to point that.im not a dump supporter and Ive signed in this blog to express my assessment of football and especially my team Pirates.Im not a one night stand kind of a supporter so sir, maybe you are fooled by one or two win and you think we have reached the climax.if we dont put pressure on everyone including those players at times we shall go down like swallows and its imperative for us to assess and anylise our team, critise and give credit were its due!so my man for your record Im a card carrying supporter of Pirates and Ive supported this team from around late 80's and Im the only one in my Parents family who follow this club and you can feel the pain more so if we loose against chiefs.so ntate be warned coz Im black and white.
