A brace from Noah Chivuta saw Free State Stars beat Ajax Cape Town 2-1 at Goble Park on Saturday afternoon.
It was the worst possible start for the home side as they went a goal down in the opening minute. George Maluleka whipped in an inviting corner-kick and Mario Booysen rose unchallenged to head home.
Free State quickly righted themselves and starting controlling the midfield battle, but for all their possession, they were unable to break down a resolute Ajax defence.
In the 15th minute, Madoda Motha did pull the best out of Hans Vonk when he let a shot off from 12 yards, but the veteran keeper did well saving to his right.
Then in the 30th minute Chivuta came within inches of cancelling Ajax’s lead when his 20-yard shot just skimmed the wrong side of the upright.
The Urban Warriors struggled to get hold of the ball in the opening 45 minutes, but did come close to doubling their lead in the 35th minute. Thembinkosi Fanteni made his way into the box and let fly from about 12 yards out, but his effort went narrowly wide.
The second half continued in the same trend as the Ea Lla Koto applied pressure on the Ajax goal. Then on 51 minutes they finally saw their pressure pay off.
A nice passing movement saw Chivuta find space inside the box, and he made no mistake with his finish.
Thereafter, Stars looked even more dominant and only had to wait another ten minutes before they took the lead. Chivuta grabbed his brace with a goal very similar to his first when he fired a powerful shot past Vonk.
Stars opted to sit back after that, but Ajax did not have enough on the day to challenge the home side.
