Absa Premiership champions SuperSport United’s poor run of form continued on Wednesday night when they had to come from behind to register a 2-2 draw with Maritzburg United.
The triple championship winners have had a difficult start to their defence of the title and were hoping to secure three points against a team sitting in 14th spot on the League table at the start of the day.
After a 40-minute delay due to floodlight failure, SuperSport started positively and took the lead when Jabulani Maluleke’s free-kick found the back of the net in the 17th minute.
The visitors took control of the game for the rest of the half and should have gone into the break with a bigger advantage, with Jose Parreira and Fikru Tefera squandering numerous chances.
In the second half, Maritzburg coach Ernst Middendorp rung the chances by bringing on Byron Hendricks for Fabian McCarthy. The move paid dividends when Hendricks’ pin-point cross found Diyo Sibisi on the far post and the striker calmly found the target from close range.
Two minutes later and Maritzburg took the lead. Sibisi’s brilliant pass caught the SuperSport defence flat-footed and Rudolph Bester raced towards goal before slotting past Jacob Mokhasi.
United fought back and equalized in the 75th minute when Maluleke’s cross caused panic in the Maritzburg defence and Johnny Mathole failed to deal with the challenge from Morgan Gould, resulting in the ball curling into the back of the net.
