Mpumalanga Black Aces and Bidvest Wits both finished with 10 men in a 1-1 draw on Wednesday evening.
The goals were scored by Rene Richards for Wits, with a free-kick, and Mpho Maleka for Aces, while Felix Mwamba Musasa and Sifiso Vilakazi received red cards.
It was not the best display of football, but it was packed full of action.
Aces had the worst possible start when they went a man down and a goal down in only the eighth minute.
Rene Richards was on a mesmerising run before he was professionally fouled by Mwamba Musasa and brought down on the edge of the 18-yard box. The referee did not hesitate in showing the Aces man a straight red card.
From the resulting free-kick Aces were made to pay the ultimate price when Richards curled a perfectly placed 20-yard shot into the bottom right hand of the goal, 1-0.
Things were going from bad to worse for the home side. Besides from trying to get hold of the ball, Neil Tovey had made his three substitutions by the 23rd minute: a couple to compensate for Musasa's red card and another to replace the injured Walter Ramulondi.
The rest of the half saw the Students controlling the possession stakes, but despite their domination they were unable to create any clear-cut chances on goal. Aces, in retrospect, were just looking to get to the half time break where they might be able to recuperate.
And that is exactly what they did. Tovey must have gave a motivational speech of mammoth proportions as his side came out into the second half looking a renewed side.
Despite Aces being a man down they seemed able to dictate terms in the midfield battle with some tough tackling and lots of running. That saw them get a large share of the ball at the start of the second 45, which they made the best of with an equalising goal in the 57th minute.
Bafo Biyela drove down the left flank and whipped in an inviting cross which was met by the head of Mpho Maleka. The Aces man made no mistake from 12 yards out with a clinical header into the bottom right-hand corner of the net, 1-1.
Then in dying minutes of the match Wits were also reduced to 10 men when Sifiso Vilakazi was shown his second yellow card for simulation and sent from the field.
In the end the match finished one a piece and the teams shared the spoils which seemed a fare result on the night.
