A late goal by Thulani Serero gave Ajax Cape Town a 1-0 derby win over Vasco da Gama at the Newlands Stadium on Wednesday night.
Ajax appeared to have the upper hand early on as some anxious play saw Vasco giving away far too much possession
It was the rookies though who had some good early chances through Sibusiso Zuma, but twice he failed to find enough power with his left foot.
Overall though the game was scrappy, and physical, with both sides putting in some meaty challenges, par for the derby status of the game.
Ajax had their best chance in the 39th minute through Granwald Scott, but his half volley was pushed against the post by Posnett Omony after being teed up by Terror Fanteni.
Vasco had the first chance after the break when Dirang Moloi went for an ambitious long range chip – it ended short but was a clever try with Hans Vonk way off his line.
But as the second half went on, Ajax began to look stronger and stronger.
George Maluleka missed a sitter of a header, while Thulani Serero was unlucky not to profit from a determined run in the 65th minute.
Vasco were reduced to 10 men when former Ajax player Aiden Jenniker went in far to enthusiastically on Sameeehg Doutie.
More chances came for Foppe de Haan’s side, but Fanteni had a shot blocked and Scott was just off target with an effort at the near post.
It looked headed for a 0-0 draw, but Serero won the game for Ajax when he headed home at the back post from Brett Evan’s 90th minute cross.
