Santos and AmaZulu drew 1-1 in a League match played at Athone Stadium on Saturday evening.
Santos opened the scoring in the second-half through Graham King and the equalizer was scored by Marc Van Heerden.
The first-half was played at a high tempo, yet there was hardly any action in the goal boxes as both sides failed to find the spark needed to carve out scoring chances.
AmaZulu keeper Mbongeni Mzimela’s only real involvement came when he beat Musa Otieno to an aerial ball, while his counterpart, Tshepo Motsoeneng, was a virtual spectator.
In fact first clear-cut chance of the half only arrived in the 42nd minute when Jurie Basie was unable to find accuracy with his header following Gregory Roelf’s cross – it was a difficult opportunity though for Basie at full speed.
The fans who braved the blustery conditions were finally given something to cheer about as Santos broke the deadlock three minutes after the restart when Salmaan King got just enough on his header to steer Erwin Isaacs’ outstanding cross in at the near post.
But Usuthu soon restored parity when Marc van Heerden’s in-swinging free kick from out near the touchline caught Motsoeneng out at his near post.
Following the goal, the Peoples’ Team upped their efforts as they looked to regain the lead, but Isaacs had a shot saved, as did King, who should have done better at the back post, while Roelf failed to hit the target from a decent position.
There were late chances for both sides, but both keepers made important saves as Motsoeneng denied van Heerden’s long range effort, while Mzimela came out trumps when faced with a Sekou Camara shot from 10-yards out at his near post.
