Platinum Stars and Maritzburg United in draw

Posted: 30 October 2010 Time: 18:04

Platinum Stars will be bitterly disappointed as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Maritzburg United in at the Moruleng Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

It was not the greatest football spectacle as neither side were able to assert their dominance in the first half. Instead it was a display of some sloppy passing and poor long-range shooting.

Stars had the majority of the possession in the opening 45 minutes, but they did very little with it because of some bad decisions in the final third and horrible shooting.

Maritzburg goalie Shu-Aib Walters might have been a busy man in the first half, but he was never really troubled. Bradley Grobler was the first man to test Walters in the 11th minute, but his 20-yard effort was a tame shot and he made a comfortable save.

Walters was again called into action a minute later when Jospeh Malongoane tried his luck from about 25 yards out, but again the keeper was able to make an easy save.

United’s first decent chance came in the 33rd minute when Diyo Sibisi picked up the ball just outside the area. He beat two defenders before he unleashed a powerful shot that sailed just inches over the cross-bar.

That was about as good as it got for the visiting team in the first half and they were lucky not to go a goal down seconds before the break when Dillon Sheppard fired over the crossbar from close range after a goal-mouth scramble.

The second half was not much better as both sides continued to try their luck from long rangewith no success. In fact, it was almost certainly one of the poorest second halves of the season as neither team was able to hang onto the ball for long enough to cause any danger.

Lebo Ramolesa probably came closest to scoring in the 90th minute when he forced Walters into a fine save. A goal-mouth scramble saw Ramolesa pounce on the loose ball and fire a powerful shot goalwards, but Walters was on hand to punch the ball away.

In the end the game ended in a goalless draw and a point was probably a fare result on the day.
