Mashamaite and Langwe score for Wits

Bidvest Wits beat Free State Stars 2-0 at Bidvest Stadium on Saturday afternoon thanks to goals from Junaid Mashamaite and Asive Langwe.

The Students certainly deserved the win on the day as they were the better side for most of the match. They passed the ball around nicely and dominated the possession stakes as they controlled the midfield battle.

Still, despite their domination, the Students couldn’t find the right pass in the final third that would result in a decent goal scoring chance. Free State were definitely not at their best as they squandered their possession with poor passing.

They did start brightly though, and had a couple of chances in the opening five minutes, but their shooting was poor. That was about as good as it got for them in the opening half.

Wits soon took control of the match and found the game’s opening goal in the 23rd minute. Stanton Fredericks whipped an inviting free-kick into the box and Mashamaite rose highest to powerfully head past a stranded Kennedy Mweene.

Aside from the opening goal there was not much other goal-mouth action.

That, however, was not the case in the second half as Stars tried to find their way back into the game. Matome Madimabe made their intentions clear in the 48th minute with a shot that went inches wide.

Ten minutes later and Kingston Nkhatha nearly drew his side level, meeting a Manti Moholo cross with a strong header that sailed just over the crossbar.

As the game progressed, Stars pressed forward more and more while Wits were virtually non-existent in the second half.

But a moment of brilliance from Langwe in the 88th minute guaranteed victory for his team. He found the back of the net with a wonder strike from about 20 yards out that flew past Mweene into the top right-hand corner.

That is the way the match ended as Wits picked up the three points and maintained their unbeaten home record.

This is a recipe for disaster for FSS. You are mostly likely to be the relegation contenders. Goodluck for this season!
