Free State Stars drew their third consecutive game of the season, playing out to a 1-1 draw with Absa Premiership rookies Vasco da Gama at the Botshabelo Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
It was a good result away from home for the Cape side, for whom Sibusiso Zuma scored his second goal of the season – this after goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene had opened the scoring from the spot.
The home team had the better of attacking exchanges in the first half, with Vasco having mainly to try their luck from distance on the rare occasions they tried to put pressure on Stars.
Paulos Masehe and Ayanda Gcaba had early opportunities for Ea Lla Koto, but Posnett Omony was up to the task.
After 15 minutes the Free State side were again in with a chance to score, but striker Aleni Lebyane could not find the target with a header from close range.
Lebogang Mothibantwa looked to try and ensure that Stars’ Kennedy Mweene had some work to do, the Zambian keeper having to save from his long range effort in the 26th minute.
But the balance of first half play again saw Stars having the upperhand in attack as Rudiger Gilbert had a 25-yard effort saved, while Lebyane missed another header and then Noah Chivuta, having a lively debut, sent a free-kick into the stands.
The game burst to life early in the second half as Rudi Isaacs went wide with a header in the 46th minute and then five minutes later Stars registered the first goal of the game from the penalty spot.
Skipper Mweene was the scorer, converting after Omony had fouled Madoda Motha.
However, the setback was temporary for Carlos das Neves’ side as Zuma equalised in the 58th minute, putting the ball over Mweene from close range after a pass from Mothibantwa.
The remainder of the game saw Stars enjoying the better chances to score, but they could just not get the ball into the back of the net, with Motha guilty of squandering good chances in the 69th, 80th and 90th minutes, all of them from well inside the box.
The result leaves Stars still searching for their first win of the season after draws to Santos and Pirates, while it was Vasco’s first point, following their defeats to Pirates and Arrows.
