Santos leave it late against Wits

Posted: 8 September 2010 Time: 21:51

Erwin Isaacs scored a 90th minute winner to seal a 2-1 win for Santos against Bidvest Wits at the Athlone Stadium on Wednesday night.

Timothy Batabaire scored an own-goal to put Santos ahead, before David Oliveira converted a penalty to bring Wits level. Isaacs then got the win for the Cape side late in the game.

The first half dished up very little goalmouth action and was a rather boring affair.

Santos had a couple of half chances through Isaacs – two in the opening 10 minutes and then another just before the break, but Energy Murambadoro’s goal was not threatened.

Wits did not have even a single effort on goal in the opening 45 minutes.

The Peoples’ Team took the lead after 54 minutes when Isaacs’ cross proved too much for Batabaire to handle and his poor control resulted in an own-goal.

It did not however take the Students long to equalise – when Sifiso Myeni went storming into the box in the 62nd minute he was brought to ground by Tshepo Motsoeneng and Oliveira converted from the spot.

The game burst into life after that as Oliveira forced a good save out of Motsoeneng.

Santos ended the match strongly and after Gregory Roelf earned a 90th minute indirect free kick in the box, Isaacs showed his quality by burying the ball into the top corner.
