AmaZulu’s start to the 2010/11 Absa Premiership season took a stutter as they sank to a 3-1 defeat to Bloemfontein Celtic on Wednesday night at the Seisa Ramabodu Stadium.
The man who caused all their problems on the night was Moses Spandeel, who grabbed a brace for Celtic to hand AmaZulu defeat and his side their first win of the league season.
AmaZulu, to be fair, were never really in the match as the Phunya Sele Sele completely dictated terms as they controlled the midfield battle and hence dominated the possession stakes. AmaZulu were simply unable to get hold of the ball.
Still, despite Celtic passing the ball around nicely and controlling matters on the pitch, they were unable to create any clear cut chances on goal with the final pass often going astray.
That was until the 20th minute when Thokozani Mshengu picked up the ball inside the 18-yard area after a good passing movement. Mshengu, 12-yards-out from goal, fired the ball into the bottom right-hand corner of the net to score Celtic’s first goal of the season and give them the lead, 1-0.
Thereafter, Phunya Sele Sele continued to pile on the pressure and were unlucky not to find their second goal five minutes later. This time Moses Spandeel with a right footed shot from the edge of the 18 yard area. The Usuthu keeper was glad to see the effort sail just past his left-hand post.
AmaZulu were virtually non-existent in the first half and matters got even worse when they fell a second goal behind in the 37th minute.
Celtic were eventually rewarded for their continuous pressure when Spandeel found his side’s second goal after a clinical finish from just inside the 18-yard area. He was set through on goal by a beautiful pass from Mshengu and Spandeel made no mistake blasting the ball home, 2-0.
AmaZulu were more than glad to hear the half time whistle and would have to make some drastic changes in the second half if they were to get anything from the match.
The second half, however, was similar to the opening 45 minutes as Celtic dictated terms once again and further extended their lead in the 59th minute.
Spandeel grabbed his second of the evening after superbly heading a Prince Hlela cross into top right-hand corner of the net and putting the result of the game beyond doubt, 3-0.
AmaZulu were able to find a consolation goal 15 minutes before the final whistle, but it did not come from open play. Instead the Usuthu found the back of the net after Ntokozo Sikhakhane scored from the penalty spot, 3-1. The spot-kick was awarded for Michael Khaile handling the ball inside the area.
In the end it was comfortable win for Celtic who will be happy to have bagged their first three points of the 2010/11 Absa Premiership season.
