Bidvest Wits have beaten FC Cape Town 4-3 on penalties to reach the Nedbank Cup semifinals.
The clash at the Bidvest Wits Stadium was a dull affair and it was no surprise when it went the full distance.
FC Cape Town dominated the first half but failed to take advantage. But despite the dominance, Wits created a few chances on counter-attack.
In the fifth minute Mark Haskins’ through pass caught the visitors napping, but Thando Mngomeni failed to take advantage when Thembalethu Moses, in goal for FC Cape Town, parried the high ball away from Mngomeni for a corner.
Mark Haskins could have put the Students ahead but his low shot after outpacing everyone, but Moses saves it in the 23rd minute.
FC Cape Town’s real chance in the first stanza fell to Lyle Lakay in the 34th minute. A long ball from the right found Lakay into space but the latter fluffed the chance when Francis Chansa easily saves. The score at halftime was 0-0 and that’s how it finished after the full 90 minutes as the two sides failed to use any of the opportunities they got.
Roger de Sa brought on Nyiko Tshabangu for the out-of-sorts Houston Hills for the start of the second half.
Chances were few and far in between in the second half. The first real chance fell to Mngomeni in the 50th minute from an inch-perfect cross from Sifiso Myeni, who came alive in the second half, but Mngomeni headed the ball high when it was easier to score than to miss.
Despite both teams making a few changes upfront, Wits bringing on Sifiso Vilakazi for Haskins and Marcelino Fransch coming on for Mukendi Mulumba, none of the two teams looked like scoring.
The last piece of action in regulation time saw Mngomeni sent off for a second bookable offence. The game went into extra time and Morne Davids of FC Cape Town was also given his marching orders for a second bookable offence, but except for the red card there was no real action and the game went to the penalties.
