Orlando Pirates beat Bloemfontein Celtic in Nedbank Cup

Posted: 14 April 2010 Time: 22:20

At the Orlando Stadium on Wednesday night, a thrilling Nedbank Cup encounter saw Orlando Pirates clinching an injury-time 2-1 win over Bloemfontein Celtic.

The game saw Pirates scoring early on through Phenyo Mongala. Celtic equalised through Mark Mayambela, but Zimbabwean Zvenyika Makonese grabbed only his second ever goal in top flight South African football to seal a 94th minute win for the Sea Robbers.

The first half was action packed with the play shifting from end to end as both sides created several good opportunities on goal.

Early play suggested Celtic would score first and this was nearly the case when Prince Olomu hit the upright after just two minutes, having been threaded through on goal by Excellent Walaza.

But five minutes later Pirates went in front with virtually their first attack when Mongala got in front of keeper Patrick Tignyemb to head home Dikgang Mabalane’s excellently flighted cross.

Mabalane himself hit the bar five minutes later with a cracking strike as Bucs enjoyed a period of domination.

The Free State side, however, began to work their way back into the game and came close when Johannes Motlhaping’s cross just eluded two unmarked team-mates, while in the 28th minute Mayambela’s hammer-blow of a shot show-cased Pirates keeper and man-of-the-match Senzo Meyiwa at his very best.

More was to come from Phunya Sele Sele as Ditheko Mototo’s header just cleared the bar, while Malokase’s control was lacking when he looked set to head down on goal.

Just before the break there were more worries for the Pirates defence when Segolela blazed a trail to the by-line, but Bucs were able to escape.

Celtic continued to enjoy the upper hand after the break, making several incisions into the Pirates half through the likes of Wellington Sambu and Segolela, but they were not close to finding the end product.

However, the complexion of the game changed in the 69th minute when Mayambela squeezed a penalty under Meyiwa after Makonese was ruled to have fouled Walaza.

The game remained there for the taking with both teams having their moments in attack in the closing 20 minutes.

Celtic though looked dangerous and also looked set to score what would surely have been the winner in the 91st minute when Segolela set up Denis Kalala, but he was denied by another outstanding Meyiwa save.

Phunya Sele Sele at least deserved extra time, but they were cruelly denied this opportunity when Makonese scored from a header with only seconds to go to the final whistle.

Pirates (4-4-2): Meyiwa; Jele, Makonese, Lekgwathi, Manyisa; Mabalane, Mothinbantwa, Kamwendo (Fanteni 80’), Mongala (Nyanda 85’); Mbuyane, Mabena

Celtic (4-4-2): Tignyemb; Khaile, Sambu, Motlhaping, Goldstone; Mayambela, Mototo, Olomu, Segolela; Walaza (Spandeel 70’), Malokase (Kalala 58’)

Ehuuuu, thanx a lot pie-rats, at least Chiefs is guaranteed yet another trophy. Please help eliminate all smaller teams except sunflowers so that Chiefs can have the smooth run to the final by beating u in the qter finals and beating sunflops in the semis. Hopefully we'll still meet ajax in the finals.

By the way don't bother worrying about where to put the Nedbank Trophy, we'll do the worrying at Naturena.

Friendly advice. Don't bother dreaming about the trophy. Use that time to dream about lotto numbers, maybe you might catch it and buy your own Trophy.

@ Zwilithini I am suprised you actually think we (Chiefs Fans) do not know the club history, Come on man my 6 year old know chiefs history angithi phela Chiefs make history every year maybe Pirates history might be a bit hard to figure. Like when was the last time you guys won a Cup? (oops that might take my 6 year old some time)...Pirates fans pretend as if they are saints you are as mouthful as us, or atleast you use to but ke you can only say something if there is something to say and with Pirates there isn't.

If really this Chips fans are saying we won by luck...th million dollar question arises...isn't luck part of football...are we the first team even internationally to win by luck? Stop being naive and senseless at times. FYI, Orlando Pirates Football Club won two games in a row from the same Sell-tic...stop telling telling us about history...and for the record if we include history we are the only SA team to have won the African Champions League...whether you like it or not and this is not negotiable.

All you have to do is to channel all your energy and focus to Supersport because they are from Moria...they will moer you this time...stop being concerned about OP FC rather be concerned ka team ya lona tuuu...wena Pearl you are next...i agree...lmao.

Congrats to my team for the win. And to some extent i agree luck was on our side yesterday. There was little inspiration in our style of play. I know we miss some players but i just wonder if that's the best formation the coach could come up with.
as for the lucky win, ask the fellas from the other side how luck has helped them win a number of games and cups over the years (penalties included).

Keep believing and you wont regret.
