Downs come right against minnows

Posted: 18 April 2010 Time: 16:54

Mamelodi Sundowns came from a goal behind in the first half to eventually run out comfortable 3-1 winners against amateur side Island FC at the Ulundi Stadium on Sunday.

Lindani Zungu opened the scoring for the home side before Sundowns came back into it with a brace from Matti Pattison and one from Felix Katongo.

The side from Pretoria showed just how potent on attack they can be when Katongo broke clear of the home side’s defence in the first minute of play, but Island keeper Morena Lekhula came off his goal line in nick of time to deny the speedy winger.

Sundowns Manqoba Ngwenya was rather casual when James Mayinga picked him out with a well weighted cross after 20 mintues, the striker who was making his first start of the season fired a tepid attempt which failed to trouble Lekhula.

However, credit must be given to Island, who play in the Vodacom League, for not being overwhelmed by their more illustrious opponents.

There was no lack of commitment or effort on their part and it was hardly surprising when Island took the lead in the 23rd minute through a well taken goal from their striker Lindani Zungu who fired confidently after beating Sundowns off-side trap.

But the visitors flexed their muscles a minute before the half time whistle, when defensive midfielder Pattison leveled matters with a composed header from Katongo’s cross.

Sundowns looked to up the pace in second half, and by the hour mark they found the back of the net on two more occasions.

First Pattison completed his brace by rounding off with aplomb after being set up by an excellent through ball from his midfield partner, Esrom Nyandoro.

Then, Elias Pelembe located the unmarked Katongo in Island’s penalty area. Katongo responded by side footing his effort beyond a stranded Lekhula.

This game is proof of why Trot Moloto is such a lousy strategist.Against slightly stronger opposition we would have kissed the cup goodbye. No improvemnt since the Chiefs game.

I agree with you on Pattison, he has been outstanding for Sundowns all season. Amazes me that he is not with the Bafana squad.

Xolani, to tell you the truth, i am a bitter about the decision to let Stoichkov go. These days i am very negative towards our team, we have the potential to be great, but i'm not sure we'll ever reach our full potential, not unless we can a new thinking at management level. If there's one area that i can safely say its poor, that must be our management and the current technical team. Yellow all the way!

has anyone noticed that Pattison is not the right colour to represent out country? (this this messed up system you need to play for Irvan "Diamond smuggler" Khoza and be black to stand a chance of being in Bafana.

I love my country....can't say the same about Bafana. (Hope Mexico distroy them in the first game)

If they're serious about competing...this is what the strongest Bafana team should look like.

Is Booth black? don't be tjatjarag bloody agent. You talking kak maan.

In your line-up you just ommitted the Kaizer Chiefs trio. Lucky for us you are not the coach and it will never happen that Josephs starts ahead of Khune or Tshabala starts on the bench.

You chose the weakest team (sunflower players and pieflops) because you want Bafana to crash out in the first round. Dream on bloody tjatjarag agent.

Even one of your own accepts the fact that management is killing Sunflowers, see Wonder : 2010-04-19 05:41.

I am a Khosi and because I am from Tshwane, Sunflops used to be my second team because it was a home team but because of the insane management of the team, I let go and now my second team is Chiefs as is my first team of choice.

I must accept that Motsepe has brought to the game nothing except pimp players. During Screamers days, Sunflops was the team that played good piano and shoe shine football. What style are they playing now?

The past coach took Sunflops from a very dissapointing position in the log and they finished second. To me that is a record and the man did an excellent job.

I only hope I meet Sunflops next and then Pierats in the Nedbank Cup. Just like in the Telkom Cup. De javu

Well done to the brazillians, in fact Bravo guys, Moloto is proving his critics wrong, majority of his players were in active in the league, There are no Amateurs, or First division teams, all the teams are equal, if u argue ask Kaizer Chiefs about Tukkis, Pta University but it seems they forget easily and u know what i foresee danger in the draw, i wish chiefs can be drawn against them, they have big mouth. maybe its high time Wonder clarrified which side of the fence he is on. He never has anything positive about Downs of late. The chimps won one cup and already they r world beaters. Downs won that game easily, that is if u knw soccer. Having said that, i agree a lot of bad things have come out of the downs camp, but downs play the best soccer in the psl. I have spoken. Take me on at ur own peril

it amazes me that even to this day ther a people who blame downs for Hristo's departure. Stoitckov did not agree with the behavoural clause on his new contract and decided to leave. He was a good coach but he was becoming a liability off the field. I have spoken. Downs the The Sky
