Kaizer Chiefs to meet Ajax in Telkom decider

Posted: 5 April 2010 Time: 17:52

Kaizer Chiefs will face Ajax Cape Town in the Telkom Knockout Cup Final this coming weekend after a penalty shootout victory over Orlando Pirates at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Monday.

After 120 minutes failed to produce a goal, Amakhosi held their nerve in post-match penalties to win 3-0, meaning Bucs’ long trophy drought will go on at least a little longer.

The match started at breakneck speed, with play moving swiftly from one end to the other as the two teams set out with attacking intent.

Pirates saw more of the ball early on, but Chiefs created the better openings, with Senzo Meyiwa forced into sharp saves by Nkosinathi Nhleko and Knowledge Musona.

On 16 minutes Meyiwa was called into action again, doing well to deflect a dipping long-range effort from Mandla Masango over the crossbar.

By this stage Chiefs were well in control and troubling Bucs with their pace and movement but, as against Mamelodi Sundowns in the semifinal, their final pass and finishing wasn’t quite as good as the build-up play.

Toward the end of the first half Meyiwa produced the best save of the match, shifting his balance quickly to prevent an own-goal from central defender Rooi Mahamutsa.

Pirates reacted with a good attack of their own and Arthur Bartman had to make a finger-tip save to deflect Dikgang Mabalane’s left-footed effort behind for a corner – it was Bucs’ first shot on target in the match.

And Pirates started the second half on the front foot, with Ndumiso Mabena showing good skill and imagination to work an opportunity just inside the area, but his effort flashed just wide of Bartman’s right-hand post.

Substitute Terror Fanteni almost broke the deadlock with his first touch in the 77th minute, but his powerful shot was superbly turned away by Bartman. Two minutes later Happy Jele got on the end of a free-kick from the right to have a free header from close range, but he somehow failed to hit the target.

The end of regulation time came and went with the score still 0-0, and the early stages of extra-time saw Fanteni hit the crossbar after springing Chiefs’ offside trap.

Five minutes before the end of extra-time, Pirates were reduced to 10 men when Mahamutsa was red-carded by Daniel Bennett, seemingly with one yellow card for a tug on Tshepo Bulu’s shirt and a second caution for back-chatting.

The lack of finishing prowess didn’t bode well for the inevitable penalty shootout, and so it proved for Pirates as they missed their first three spot-kicks, while Chiefs netted all of theirs.

Penalty sequence: Jele misses, Torrealba scores; Fanteni misses, Mathebula scores; Mabena misses, Bulu scores

I lament all the missed chances in the first half. Second half Piecity were all over us but failed to capitalise.

It was attack, attack, attack on both sides in both halves but the better team won on the day. Strike that, the best team won.

I said this before that Piecity is allergic to trophies. Isinyama baf'ethu, hambani e South Beach niyogeza.

Its time Krol called it quit, it showed that he didn't practice penalties, not even a single conversion? haaibo. Bartman did well, the whole team did well.

My friend Brokefan, your betterhalf Pearl, The Khosi One - Thabang, Mash-do, Michael and all the die hard Chiefs fans, I say to you - I love you all...We are simply the best....Durban is rocking...I can feel the spirit of Moses Mabhida hovering all over chanting a vistory song...Shapa Khosi Shapa

Now I think Krol will have enough time preparing his boy 4 their next game. Isn't this what we call Justice to the poor coach?

During the match I saw a pierats fan holding up a board written "someone will cry" hahahaha....lol.
