Late Spelman goal earns Santos a draw

Posted: 27 October 2009 Time: 21:29

A late goal by Phikolethu Spelman earned Santos a 2-2 draw against 10-man SuperSport United.

In a tightly fought battle, Santos took the lead through Graham King's free kick after 19 minutes.

Taken on the right flank with his left foot, King's curling set piece was missed by everyone including goalkeeper Emille Baron and the ball found the far corner of the net.

But the champions replied quickly with a great goal by 19-year-old Thandani Ntshumayelo.

After the break, Bongani Khumalo said something harsh to Tshepo Motsoeneng and after referee Peter Mabuza checked with his assistant, United's captain was sent off. This happened in the 52nd minute.

SuperSport get on with things and actually up the temp.

They score a second through Morgan Gould who powerfully heads in Ntshumayelo's cross, in what looks to be well-worked winner against all odds.

But Santos don't give up. Their strong defence is complimented by the quick counter attacks and this is how they equalise.

In the dying seconds of the match, Spelman gets on the end of a low Chapman cross but SuperSport have themselves to blame for some loose defending.

Santos must thank the drunk referee Peter Mabuza for giving Bongani Khumalo a dubious controversial red card... anyway thanks for clamping Supersport wings before they flew high with six points lead

Boring game it was... I really Dnt know why people want hunt to coach the national team, his tactics are boring and leave much to be desired... Does he really care what s.a football is about? And are s.a fan will be happy to see s.a playing boring football the way supersport does?
Safa needs to think long and hard about this, hunt is not the solution, neither is gordon, jomo nor barker.. Maybe pitso should be the man since we need someone who can build a winning team for the next world cup in brazil. I've never in my watched any team coached by hunt for the entire 90 minutes before. Beating pirates to them is a deal but as far as playing that s.a brand of football which everyone seems to yearn will never be a reality under hunt.. How on earth can justify the persistant calls of including glen salmon in the bafana setup? S.a needs to score goals but this is a man that has scored 2 goals since playing for united.

Negative tactics are working well for Boebie, he still parks a bus at the back with 30 minutes to go and only pushing Otieno at extra time..... I guess maybe the champs deserve to be shown some respect to an extent.

Good game though, Gavin`s yet to beat Santos at Sion and must be gutted. Anyway the rsult is good for all and sundry, good work Boebie I guess..... Now do'nt set off to the holy mecca anytime soon, hoor? Lol!

Wat happened to klate tonight??
Maybe any player who does well against pirates, chiefs and sundowns should be including in the national team....
Kadi, klate, bartman, b.khumalo, the whole of santos back 4, cale, serero,..... All of these players only perform well against big teams.

Sizwe I beleived that too.... for a long while, until I realised that it's the result that counts the most..... boring as Sion are but to beat this close knit system they apply takes some doing.

Both former giants have been on the receiving end of high margin beatings to attest to this, the other got 4 in the rain with latest victim getting 3.... I`m a fan of diski99 and hate direct football, but Hunt applies it quite well I must say.

The peoples team were all over Supersport, in fact they should have won that game 2-3 in favor of Santos if it wasn’t the poor assistant decision to flag Spellman off side when he was in line with flat Supersport defense, I’m amaze with people who are saying Santos were lucky, then luck means something I don’t know or may be they were watching another game.

My respect for Gavin Hunt is increased evrytime I watch Supersport play. How he manages to win against all odds. The man always has plan B. SSU will win this league again.

Another thing about SSU is that they do not have big name players who play nice football without winning. They have soldiers who go out there to die for the team.

I always said this: WATCHING SSU play again any team other than the BIG 2 and Chloorkop Mambush Tuck-shop Banz-shai fruit-veg NANANA Night Club CIRCUS, is a total waste of time.

They only find motivation in beating The JUJU boys and The Most Glamorous KHOSI By Nature by Choice and of course The Daniel Mudau - Charles Motlohi BOXING Association.

Yaaa Right, NEW KID! And you expect the MASSes to watch such a boring display just because there will be a winner?

We not only interested in the scoreline, but also in a good passage of play.

Santos did so many teams a favour. this is a team which has many Botswana players. like Boitumelo Mafoko who was registered for Pirates in 2007 and i dont know what happend, now he is doing a good job for Santos. If teams dont beat Super sport they will win the league for the third time in a row.

I am glad you are my fan, do you want an autograph?

Santos is not a walk in the park, they were the first team to beat Pirates, beat Sundowns and drew away to Chiefs.

Superspy is just an ordinery team, thats why they will never make any serious impact in Africa. Yesterday they were lucky to get a draw. They had ball possession and were camping on Santos side but only had two shot at goal that were luckily converted. on the other hand the flat Santos managed to get plenty chances and actually converted 3. Superspy strikers are not scoring goals, its the midfield (Klate) and defenders (Morgan and Bongani) soon this will dry up and they will be in trouble.

Pure pure pure jealousy sizwe and thabang no wonder you follow teams with no consistancy. As a Bucs fan i get more embarrassed when the team will have 60-70% ball possession and end up loosing.

SSU knows what makes a team big i.e. winning winning winning. Mediocrity will take you nowhere guys, same as being jealous of other teams success. It is only lapse of concentration in the dying minutes that cost this emerging giants of sa football to lose 2 points. As for Hunt probably Kaizer is eating a humble pie in undermining SA coaches. Viva Hunt, Mngqithi, Igesund, De Sar, Mjoma...NO!

Jacob Dnt be stupid... That is supersport vs. santos you refering to... Any team playing santos at home can have ball possession of +60%, sundowns did that in their own background... Santo only defends to counterattack.
As for consistency, maybe then supersport's consistency should start showing in cup competitions as well... The fact will always remain, supersport is a boring side to watch when they're playing the 12 other psl teams, there's nothing wow about them.. Like a small club they are, their players will always to motivate to perform well against pirates, sundowns and chiefs..
I doubt you enjoyed watching the game last night... Anyways, consistency doesn't mean playing well against pirates only to drop your performance against small teams..., hunt would be a bad choice for bafana... Pitso built supersport for what it is today, atleast then they showed some signs of attractive football..
It's not about jealous but about stating the obvious.
How many supersport fan enjoy watching their team player the other 12 small team-trust me there's not a lot?
