Orlando Pirates advanced to the semifinals of the SAA Supa8 after beating Ajax Cape Town 2-0 at Athlone Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Urban Warriors dominated for most of the game, but Pirates’ keeper Francis Chansa was in superb form.
The hosts threatened in the first minute of the game via a Franklyn Cale free-kick, but Chansa produced a good save to deny the winger.
The Buccaneers’ first effort on the Ajax goal came in the 18th minute when Bennett Chenene shot wide from a promising position, with teammate Teko Modise sending his effort wide just a minute later.
Brett Evan sent a powerful shot just over on the half hour, while Shameeg Doutie hit the crossbar a minute later.
Terror Fanteni sent his header from Cale’s cross, straight at Chansa in the 38th minute.
The match remained goalless at the break.
Clifford Ngobeni should have handed the hosts the lead in the 51st minute when he found himself unmarked in the box, but he hesitated and the ball was cleared straight to Cale, who shot over.
The visitors took the lead in the 72nd minute when Chenene’s shot deflected off Clayton Jagers past Hans Vonk.
Rudzani Ramudzuli should have doubled Pirates’ lead three minutes later when he was set up by Lucky Lekgwathi, but the striker shot tamely at Vonk.
Chansa produced a superb save in the 86th minute to deny Mkhanyiseli Siwahla, and the ball fell to Nhlanhla Shabalala, who shot over.
Pirates made it 2-0 in the dying seconds of the game when Jagers’ attempt to clear Paulus Masehe’s cross hit Ramudzuli before hitting the back of the net.
