Mamelodi Sundowns crushed Golden Arrows 3-0 in an Absa Premiership clash on Saturday afternoon.
In a very successful display, Katlego Mphela opened the scoring for the Brazilians late in the first half. Then in the second half Siyanda Xulu and Mabhudi Khenyeza rounded off the victory when they both scored in injury time.
Sundowns were out of the blocks quick with their first chance on goal coming as early as the first minute when Khenyeza’s 30 yard shot just skimmed the left hand up-right.
Ten minutes later Khenyeza tested the Arrows defence again when he met the end of a corner-kick with a powerful header. The keeper, however, was at his best producing a fine save to deny the Sundowns striker from point-blank range.
Thulasizwe Khuzwayo was called into action again in the 27th minute, this time diving full stretch to his right to deny James Mayinga a wonderful long range effort.
The Arrows keeper was certainly keeping his side in the game and this was none more evident than when he denied the Brazilians yet again in the 29th minute. This time he used his feet to save another Khenyeza shot.
Sundowns did eventually breathe a sigh of relief when they did find the opening goal three minutes before the half time break with the scorer being none other than Katlego Mphela. The striker latched onto a good low cross and finished expertly to score his 18th league goal of the season and give his side the lead, 1-0.
The second half was more of the same as Sundowns dominated throughout. However, despite their complete control of the game they squandered chance after chance in front of the Arrows goal.
Only in the dying minutes of the match did they make their superiority pay as both Xulu and Khenyeza scored.
First in the 90th minute Xulu broke straight through the middle of the Arrows defence using some wonderful skill to find himself in a one-on-one situation with the keeper. Zulu showed real class, thereafter, as he cleverly shipped the on-rushing keeper, 2-0.
Then only a minute later, Khenyeza was rewarded for all his hard work when he expertly finished off a good Sundowns passing movement from just outside the six yard box, 3-0.
The Tshwane giants were simply brilliant on the day and fully deserved their 3-0 win.
