Kaizer Chiefs ended their Absa Premiership campaign on a high with a 2-1 victory over Free State Stars at Loftus Stadium on Saturday.
The win, courtesy of goals from Knowledge Musona and Josta Dladla, ensures AmaKhosi finish third in the table. Molemo Moholo netted for Stars, who finish the campaign in 13th.
The Amakhosi were by far the superior side in the first 45 minutes as they dictated terms in the middle of the park and should have gone into the half time break more than a goal in front.
The first chance of the game came as early as the fifth minute when Abia Nale pulled the best out of the Stars’ keeper Kennedy Mweene. Nale latched onto a loose ball just outside the 18 yard box and fired off a snap shot that had Mweene at full stretch to tip the shot away around the post.
Musona then showed a poacher’s mentality when he latched onto a parried save and tapped home. A corner come in and Tinashe Nengomashe rose to meet it, but only succeeded in forcing Mweene into another fine save. But the Stars keeper could not hold onto the shot, spilling it straight into the path of Musona who made no mistake burying the ball into the back of the net, 1-0.
Then, totally against the run of play in the 57th minute, in a rare foray forward by Free State they managed to find the goal that brought them level. Moholo latched onto a pass inside the 18 yard area and finished expertly to make it 1-1.
Chiefs were a little stunned by the goal and lost their rhythm for a short period of time. The Amakhosi, however, eventually composed themselves and began stringing some passes together. They were helped by the dismissal of Free State’s Paul Masehe in the 70th minute for his second yellow card.
Thereafter Chiefs managed to find the winning goal in the 73rd minute. Punch Masenamela drove down the left flank and supplied an inch perfect pass to find Dladla unmarked inside the 18-yard area.
With his last touch of the game, before being substituted, Dladla controlled the ball expertly and scored for his side with a well place shot into the bottom right and corner, 2-1.
