AmaZulu’s trip down to Cape Town was a profitable one as they beat a lacklustre Santos 1-0 at Athlone Stadium on Wednesday.
The first half was a bit of a dull affair with both teams lacking in cohesion up front.
Santos had an early chance through Erwin Isaacs, who couldn’t beat AmaZulu keeper Mbongeni Mzimela with a low left-footed drive, as well as Jurie Basie, who shot into the side-netting.
AmaZulu got stronger as the half progressed and created long-range opportunities through Dumisani Ngwenya, who shot wide, and Thami Sangweni, whose blistering 25-yard drive was saved by Lee Langeveldt.
Five minutes into the second half Santos were almost in front when Isaacs’ thunderous 30-yard drive cannoned off the woodwork.
There was late pressure from the Cape side as Isaacs had a shot blocked in the 80th minute and then five minutes later he was denied a penalty after going down under a challenge from Mzimela.
But in the final minute of regulation time Ngwenya sealed the three points when he showed great skill on the edge of the Santos box before picking out the top corner with a scorching effort.
