SuperSport edge closer to PSL title

Posted: 17 February 2010 Time: 22:08

With a win against Platinum Stars and two games to go SuperSport United look to be on their way to a third consecutive Absa Premiership title.

A single goal from Brent Carelse handed his side a 1-0 win over Dinaledi at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Wednesday night.

It was a game of two halves as the Stars dictated the first 45 minutes and then two clever substitutions by Gavin Hunt saw his side dominate the second stanza.

The home side clearly settled quicker and had the best of the chances in the first half, with Bradley Grobler their star player.

Grobler shot a powerful ball over the crossbar early on, before beating a couple of defenders and firing on goal a few minutes later – although his shot was off target again.

SuperSport’s only chance of the half came three minutes before the break when Daine Klate failed to round off a good passing movement by his side. After receiving the ball in side the 18 yard box, in space, he failed to direct his shot on target as it slipped inches past the post.

Hunt made two substitutions in an effort to change the game. Dario Monteiro was replaced by Brian Umony while Thabo Mongalo came on for Siyabonga Nkosi.

The changes had an immediate effect as a Mongalo shot from the edge of the 18 yard box in the 48th minute just skimmed the wrong side of the upright.

United continued to press forward in stifled attacks and just as it looked like it would not be their night.

But Brent Carelse broke the deadlock in the 71st minute, latching onto a low cross from Jabu Maluleke and showing class and composure to finish from 12 yards out.

Stars tried to find their way back into the game but a resolute SuperSport defence held them at bay and managed to hold out for a 1-0 win.

Good result SSU, you really are playing like true Champions. And it seems like you're truly on your way to matching our record of 3 in a row!

Not so fast Wonder, nothing much has changed still broer.

Having watched Sion tonight, I'll tell you they were very lucky to bag all three since they were far from convincing as well....That moegoe defender Mofokeng just gave Carelse a chance to shine, and shine he did.

Now with the Swallows game in hand which is due to be started from scratch, the gap is still two points effectivey leaving Wits with all to do on Saturday. After they've [Wits] won that one and we win all our remaining games like we should, must and will then our hat-trick record will remain unmatched.

If not..... Then they'll still be two titles short to match our superiority and dominance in this lifetime! Downs all the way!.......Still.

@ Sweyts, stop being a typical fan by leaving too much in the past and start leaving in the present. Some of the Downs players have never won the premiership and the would like to do so as players of the current seasons and thats precisely what SSU players are intended doing. Moreover, no matter how many times a team won the premiership, the more they win it the more sweeter it is.

Sweyts? u r saying supersport was not convincing they were lucky to win yesterday....

Can you honestly, as a soccer lover not as a clueless fan , , can you honestly tell me that your past three games was not a matter of luck? let us not even mention the robbery against celtic or the lucky Moriri against Platinum stars.....

Sweyts, my man. Please get counselling while you are still in dreamland. Otherwise you will commit suicide when the reality strikes.

Mabonza, dude you need help! On one hand, lights are manmade and if they fail (it doesn’t matter what caused them to fail) it results in human error. Rain, on the other hand, is NOT manmade (it is natural), the same applies to storm, death, etc, and this results in natural influence.
The game SWA-SUN game will re-start.....even “OUNCES OF GOLD” won’t help you on this one. ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!

@Sweyts, i think u r the one who is full of hatred man. The topic here was Downs & SSU but choose comment about Chips. Does Chips the only team dat had won trophies in the past? And 4 yo record, i have nothing against Chips & absolutely nothing 2 do with them together with all their trophies they won coz 2 me they mean nothing as im now leaving in the present. The main focus 4 Downs 2 day must b: r they gonna win any trophy this seasons with the expensive stars they have or will they continue to leave in the past.
