Sundowns, Swallows share the points

Posted: 19 February 2010 Time: 21:00

Mamelodi Sundowns fought back from two goals down to force a 3-3 draw with Moroka Swallows on Friday night.

Tonight’s contest was of course a continuation of Wednesday night’s clash, which was called off after 35 minutes due to the failure of one of the floodlights. Swallows thus took a 2-0 lead into the game, with the match continuing in the 35th minute.

Their goals on Wednesday night had come from Siyabonga Nomvete, who had cut in from the left and fired a sizzling effort across the body of Brian Baloyi in the ninth minute, and Vincent Kobola, who had struck with a thunderous 30-yard drive to double the advantage after 35 minutes.

Prior to, and between both goals, it had, however, been Sundowns who enjoyed the better of the play, creating several chances on goal, but having not been able to beat Greg Etafia in goal for Swallows.

Back to tonight’s game then, which in effect saw Sundowns outscoring Swallows by three goals to one.

Both sides had half chances in the opening passage of play, before Downs struck in the 43rd minute to get the goal they so badly needed; Mathew Pattison’s free-kick was floated in from the right and deceived Etafia.

When the teams retuned for the second half, it was the Brazilians who remained on top, with chances coming in from Papi Zothwane, whose 47th-minute effort went just wide, and a 57th-minute shot from Elias Pelembe, which forced Etafia to get down quickly to cover his near post.

And in the 67th minute the pressure paid off as Zothwane bundled the ball home to level matters after another blunder from Etafia following a Pattison free-kick.

But the lead was only to last for two minutes as Nomvete snuck into the box to head in Lefa Tsutsulupa’s free-kick.

Goal chances were seemingly being created at will and Sundowns could well have netted in the 74th minute, but Surprise Moriri shot straight at Etafia from close range.

But Sundowns kept on coming at their opponents and in the 76th minute it was 3-3 as Swallows again failed to deal with Pattison’s ball into the box, enabling Moriri to net from close range.

There were anxious moments in the Swallows box as the pressure continued to mount from the team in yellow, who were inches away from making it 4-3 when Felix Katongo’s header smashed into the cross-bar and back into play.

Zothwane then missed a great chance in injury time when he ballooned the ball over from 10-yards out.

U guys r serious losers, so u celebrate a draw like that? Ur useless Flops were already 2-0 down when the game was called off, why did u need the PSl to help u by erasing Birds' goals? U said u'll win by u drew, where is all the we'll win the Lig trash talk? Ur Flour is where it is thanx to Motsepe bring officials and teams, but he forgot to bribe SSU, u r a bunch of losers who celebrate a Draw, what douche bags u r?

I'm surprised there are some Sundowns supporters who are proud that they have drawn this match. Fact is in the the scheme of things a draw for Sundowns is as good as a loss.Unless if this people were already resigned for a heavy thumping by Swallows.

I'm also surprised that there are some Sundowns fans who are so stupid to think they will automatically carry over their form to the next season. If it was that simple Pirates would have won the league evry second season.

And by the way when you are a big team - and i know Sundowns regard themselves as such even though their support base is smaller than that of Amazulu and Black Leopards coming secong in the league is nothing to be celebrated.

i'm not celebrating a loss but rather applauding the fighting spirit. the way Downs strangled them & entertained at the same time was wonderful. I still feel Downs were hard done by. I was @ the stadium during the abandoned Santos game & the wednesday game & still don't see y the league can apply rules differently 4 the same scenario

Tzozo&Mzoe you must learn to read with understanding.Don't expose your lack of education here.Anyway i'm not suprised that you two boys lack any kinda education bcos ur chairman does lack that kinda education hence his teams supporters turned to prostitution. So we are celebrating the soccer spectacle that was dished out by Downs not a draw.

mzoe, @ the rate ur going u likely to pop an artery. Take it easy. From the bile u spewing i can safely conclude u support 1 of the 14 teams below Downs which in turn means that despite the poor start Downs was actually better than yo team. Worse still, if u don't support one of arrows, ajax, santos, wits etc (teams that managed 2 beat Downs this season) then it means that yo team could beat us hence the negativity & conspiracy theories(bribery claims). Giv credit where its due. Not many teams can dominate as Downs did when they are 2 goals down.

Oscar, wrong, I'm a SSU fan, Yes, the same SSU that has all but won the Lig again, happy? The same SSU that has won more in its short history than u in ur long history. The same SSU that is supposed to be the smaller of the two Pretoria clubs yet it wins more than the supposed BIG brother. Yes, the same SSU that Motsepe wanted to buy but was denied by Khulu Sibiya before settling on the cheap Greek controlled Flour / Flops.
