Chiefs secure third

Posted: 24 February 2010 Time: 22:53

Kaizer Chiefs secured third place on the Absa Premiership standings for the 2009/10 season after defeating relegation-threatened Mpumalanga Black Aces 2-0 at the Loftus Stadium in Pretoria on Wednesday evening.

Amakhosi scored their goals via winger Mandla Masango and captain Jimmy Tau (just his second official goal for the club since joining in 2005) and now hold a four point over fourth-place Santos (who lost at home to AmaZulu), ensuring that they will finish third on the table.

Aces, on the other hand, are now certain to at least finish in the bottom two and they could even be dragged right down to last place on the final day of the season after Jomo Cosmos beat Mamelodi Sundowns and moved to within a point of the Mpumalanga side.

AmaZayoni actually created more scoring opportunities on the night, but when they allowed Masango to sneak in and score from close range in the 13th minute they were always going to be chasing the game.

Darrel Smith and Mpho Maleka looked lively up front for the visitors but they were never really able to test Itumelenga Khune in the Chiefs goal, leaving the score 1-0 in favour of the Soweto side at the break.

Khune and his defence continued to stand firm in the second half, with the Bafana Bafana goalkeeper making two good saves in quick succession to deny Vusi Masondo on the hour mark.

Aces were made to pay for missing their opportunities when Tau notched up Chiefs’ second goal in the 74th minute. Striker Knowledge Musona provided the cross from the left and Tau headed home at the back post to effectively end the game as a contest.

There was still time for Aces to force a few more saves out of Khune but the Soweto side ended with a clean sheet and will be satisfied at having secured third place behind champions SuperSport United and second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns.

We are not going to celebrate the 3rd spot like our rivals pirates who are celebrating the 5th spot or even the sunflowers who think the 2nd spot means u r a champion.

We seriously need changes if we want 2 challenge 4 the league title next season.

I suggest that the coach promotes at least 2 defenders, 1 playmaker and 2 striker from the development side. Michael Nkambule proved in most of our friendly games that he deserves the Amakhosi jersey or else we'll regret like we did with Xulu.

I remember us lying at the bottom of the league and everyone mocked at us. Look who is on top 3 now. Position 3 is not that bad considering the ‘cheap labourers’ (as people refer to them) we had. We gave expensive-quality players a difficult time and earned a reputable position in the end. I wish we could make changes in the following departments: Defense: release 4 defenders (Nehayo, Isaacs, Ntuka, Mbooi), give Molekwane more game time and buy 2 experienced defenders (options: Sangweni, Brett Evans, Derrick Spencer, Bongani Khumalo) Midfield: Release 2 (Gerald Sibeko, Tshabalala [Overseas]) and get Lefa Tsutsulupa. Replace Zwane with Erwin Isaacs Strikers: Release Torelba, give Tshepo Bulu more running time and get Phumelele Bhengu from Swallows.

While some supporters of one "big" Soweto team were busy claiming that their team was the best and saying their team will win everything, and that SS will not do it again, some of us were quietely hoping that Pretoria dominates again. Now it is Pretoria eight PSL titles and Soweto four. No Pretoria team has won the PSL title more than any of the Pretoria sides. Pretoria is dominant and will be dominant next year again. Where are those commentators who touted the Sowetans as the favourites? Kickoff and others it is a different thing to say Chiefs or Pirates are your favourite teams... but to have said they are favourites to win the league this season was farfetched. Please don't ever again say they are on form based on off season fluke performances. They will never win this league again... and the Soweto derby is a damp squib k*k. You can quote me on this one.

I was enjoying reading your comment until I got to the last 2 sentences where you spoiled the whole report. You seem to be having serious issues with Joburg and clearly those issues have got nothing to do with soccer. My advise, get yourself a partner. If you got one already clearly that person is abusing you, get a new one or get yourself a hobby (swimming with crocodiles will suit you best). If you feel stressed and need something to cheer you up, look at your body on the mirror, you will surely laugh at how shapeless your body was turned by your hatred for the City of Gold. And another thing, refrain from drinking too much alcohol, rat poison will take you fast to where you want to be.
